Charming village house with terrace and picturesque views

Delightful, recently renovated village house on three levels and situated in the old part of the village just below the château ruins. Facing south-east and overlooking the rooftops to the hills beyond, the house is a few minutes walk to the lively village square, with its bars and restaurants. It has its own ground floor terrace with garden table and chairs and is only a short walk to the Roman pool, a picturesque part of the river Bresque, which has been landscaped into the village swimming pool!.

Salernes, famous for the fabrication of its tiles and ceramics, is situated in the heart of the Var, 15 miles south of the Lac St Croix, 25 miles inland from the bay of St Tropez and 1 hour east of Aix-en-Provence. The nearest town is Draguignan, but the towns of Cannes, Monte Carlo, Nice and Grasse are all easily accessible. Nice and Marseille airports are both approximately 1 hour.

Salernes and its neighbouring villages

Salernes's history dates back to Roman times when the village was the tile making centre of Europe. Today, an enormous choice can be found in both floor and wall tiles and hand-painted ceramic tiles are a popular speciality of the existing tile makers. There are lively markets on Wednesdays and Sundays, together with excellent shopping facilities. During the summer months regular musical evenings in the village square are very popular, creating a typical Mediterranean atmosphere, with bars and restaurants jostling for space under the majestic plane trees. The surrounding villages of Tourtour, 'village in the sky', Lorgues and Entrecasteaux with its château are all worth a visit, as are the picturesque villages of Sillans-la-Cascade, with its impressive waterfall, and Fox Amphoux.

Local distractions

Cycling and walking are both popular outdoor activities in the area with plenty of scope along kilometres of scenic routes away from the main roads. Wild orchids flower in abundance from the beginning of April until mid June, and together with a prolific assortment of wild flowers, make a visit by any enthusiastic botanist worthwhile. Tennis and horse riding can both be found in a around the village and golf 25 minutes by car. The Lac St Croix is a refreshing change to the busy coast in summer, where one can picnic, swim, windsurf, sail or canoe in spectacular and peaceful surroundings. The Gorges du Verdon, reputably Europe's deepest gorge, leads into the lake and merits a visit for its impressive scenery.
