Other activities in the area include hiking, birding, photography, summer rodeos, floating the Nueces River, and exploring the limitless miles of scenic country roads. Two of the most scenic highways in Texas are Hwy 55 between Barksdale and Rocksprings, and Hwy 337 between Medina, Vanderpool, Leakey and Camp Wood.
Take the 7-mile drive from Barksdale to Vance along Hwy 335. At one of the ranches look for giraffe, kangaroo, camel, antelope, zebra and other exotic wildlife. From Vance, drive another 2.6 miles to a beautiful overlook of the Nueces. It is this river that carries water from the Frio and Sabinal to the Gulf of Mexico, and was once the disputed southern border with Mexico. Consider it the 'mother' river of the Hill Country!
Don't miss 'Quince,' an old-time, crystal-clear, 15-ft-deep Nueces River swimming hole outside Camp Wood; or the beautiful Nueces River dam south of Camp Wood; or all-you-can-eat at the popular Casa Falcon in Camp Wood (wear your cowboy hat!).
