Mountain View Lodge lies on the western edge of the scenic Texas Hill Country, offering spectacular views and sunsets--great for gatherings large or small. This modern, 2-story (2,500 sq ft) lodge is along crystal-clear, spring-fed Pulliam creek, which is ideal for swimming, tubing, and snorkeling. A 5-ft-deep swimming hole is at the lodge. Nearby is a large natural spring. The Lodge sits high above the creek with a lovely, panoramic mountain view. The area is Nueces Canyon, home to many species of birds and other wildlife. The Lodge is located 6 miles north of Camp Wood and 28 miles west of Leakey, near Barksdale, on a small ranch. It has central heat and air conditioning and provides all the comforts of home. There are large living areas upstairs and downstairs with a southwestern decor. The main living area is upstairs, which includes a large kitchen/dining area, a living room, and two bedrooms. Downstairs is an entertainment area and more bedrooms.

Other activities in the area include hiking, birding, photography, summer rodeos, floating the Nueces River, and exploring the limitless miles of scenic country roads. Two of the most scenic highways in Texas are Hwy 55 between Barksdale and Rocksprings, and Hwy 337 between Medina, Vanderpool, Leakey and Camp Wood. Take the 7-mile drive from Barksdale to Vance along Hwy 335. At one of the ranches look for giraffe, kangaroo, camel, antelope, zebra and other exotic wildlife. From Vance, drive another 2.6 miles to a beautiful overlook of the Nueces. It is this river that carries water from the Frio and Sabinal to the Gulf of Mexico, and was once the disputed southern border with Mexico. Consider it the 'mother' river of the Hill Country! Don't miss 'Quince,' an old-time, crystal-clear, 15-ft-deep Nueces River swimming hole outside Camp Wood; or the beautiful Nueces River dam south of Camp Wood; or all-you-can-eat at the popular Casa Falcon in Camp Wood (wear your cowboy hat!).

Accommodations: Upstairs (main living area) has 2 bedrooms with king-sized beds sleeping 4 people. Downstairs are recreational accommodations and beds for 9 people. Each level has a fireplace and a full bath. Large decks on both levels provide majestic hill country views and a comfortable setting for relaxation. The fully equipped kitchen includes a microwave and a dishwasher. The downstairs deck includes a barbecue grill for outdoor cooking. Also downstairs are a washer and dryer.

Weather conditions: It is not just summertime that's great in the Hill Country. Fall, spring, and even winter are some of the most wonderful weather days. The water source for the Lodge is from a well tapped into the nearby spring aquifer--an extra treat. It's processed through a water softener just to remove the hardness and is really great quality water--classic Hill Country.

Pets: Pets ages 1 year or over are welcome.

We loved our stay at the Mountain View Lodge and can not wait to return. The deck and views are beyond description with the long distance views of the big hills and creek. The crystal clear swimming hole is quite the treat as well right down the pathway from the house. The house is well maintained and extremely clean. Every effort is taken to make the guests feel warm and welcome with labels on where things go. We stay in a lot of homes in the country and unfortunately many times, I wish I had brought mouse traps. Not here!!!! It is spotless and clean. The humming birds and birds are a treat everyday off the deck. The sunsets of spectacular as well. Oh yes, and feeding the goats was a high light as well. Thank you for sharing your home.

June visit to Mountain View

We visited MVL in early June 2008 and found it to be very nice, clean and totally well-organized. They have thought of everything to make your visit wonderful. Unfortunately the river was very low due to lack of rain but that did not stop us from having a great time. Sitting on the porch watching the sunsets and enjoying morning coffee was a delight. Having a large bird feeder right off the porch gave us plenty of opportunity to view the many varieties of birds that live there. The owners provided the bird feed and lots of directions. Even 'city slickers' will enjoy this venue.

We are planning another trip in the fall when it will be cooler and hopefully some rain will bless the area to refresh the vegatation.

What a great place! This is such a great home and everything you need is available in the house! Mr. & Mrs. Graf have gone a step above to make you feel at home. My family enjoyed the water, the scenic overview, the whole place. WE look forward to returning!

We just got back from the wonderfully relaxing Mountain View Lodge! We especially enjoyed swimming in the crystal-clear creek and feeding the goats. It's been awhile since I've had such a relaxing night's sleep -- the amazing Hill Country night truly helps you forget about all the city hassles. We can't wait to visit again. Thank you for opening the lodge to us.
