Good pet-friendly house but...

My husband, baby and I as well as another couple wanted a nice weekend getaway in the Sierras and after searching the web for a pet-friendly cabin, we were delighted to come across this listing.
The description of this listing is pretty accurate, except I wouldn't call it a cabin. I'm from the mountains of New Mexico and when we say cabin, we mean a certain thing. This is more like a house in a neighborhood. Granted, the houses aren't squashed in next to each other but you definitely see other houses around you--and when you're in the hot tub, you don't feel much privacy with a couple of houses looking down on you. Yeah, maybe on the deck if you sit against the house you can't see other houses but if you walk a few feet closer to the edge, you can see the house below and to the sides. We expected a more secluded getaway. And that was our mistake for assuming it would be that. When I now reread the description, it's not misleading in that way. I just expected a more hidden, tucked away charming mountain cabin.
THE GOOD: great for pets. Our dogs loved being able to run from the deck to the dog run below. Fully loaded kitchen (although I would bring my own large pot next time as all the big pots had chipped teflon on the bottom--scary), nice pool table, great deck except there was dog hair covering the lounge chairs so no one sat in them. The other swinging chairs were so comfy. The owner is very responsive by email and phone.
THE BAD: It's listed here as "away from it all" but we all thought it was more like a house in a woodsy neighborhood. It might have more charm if it was snowing outside. We also felt that when you're on vacation, you leave most of the cleaning at home. After paying the $95 cleaning fee, we were given instructions that we had to haul all our trash to a dump or pack it with us, wash all the sheets and towels and remake the beds and put towels back on the racks. We just had to trust that the former guests really did wash our sheets and unfortunately, I found dirt on my pillowcase. So maybe they left in a hurry, figuring no one would ever notice. We frequently rent other vacation home and we've never had to pay a cleaning fee and ALSO make remake our beds before leaving. I can understand doing a general pick up after ourselves and throwing the sheets into a hamper or even the wash but that left us a bit grumpy on our vacation.
I think if you're looking for a house to share with a large group of people and need to be close to good hiking, this is a good place. If you're looking for more seclusion and hope to relax outdoors and truly be "away from it all" this is not the spot.
