One mile north of Corolla, on North Carolina's famed Outer Banks, having hugged the Atlantic Ocean from all the way below Hatteras sixty miles to the south, the paved road abruptly ends. So begins one of the best kept secrets on America's east coast; for the Outer Banks are not done yet. Another eleven miles of wild and beautiful coast stretches up to Virginia's southernmost shore. Known locally as the '4-wheel drive area' for the SUV's typically needed to access its treasures, this very northern section of the Outer Banks is still sparsely inhabited. Drive north roughly three miles up the beach (4WD required) to the area known as Swan Beach, look 500 feet off to your left, and there, nestled back behind the twenty foot beach dune, you'll find a yellow beach house named Tranquility. Tranquility was built in 1997 - it's clean and modern. The house has got a lot to offer, but all else just pales in comparison to the main thing: where it is.

Nearest Beach: beach at 150 Metres
Tranquility is located about 4 miles beyond the end of the 'hard road' in the area known as Swan Beach. It is fairly well centered within the 'wild and wonderful' 4WD area yet not really very far from all the amenities and fun that the Outer Banks has to offer: From the shopping and dining in Duck and Corolla, to exploring the Currituck Lighthouse or the virgin natural shores of False Cape State Park just north beyond the Virginia state line, to day trips south to Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.

Screened porch off kitchen, outdoor fish cleaning table with sink, wooden Adirondack chairs on upper deck.

My wife and I thought this was the best beach experience we have had. The house was great with a stash of chairs, umbrellas etc. The weather was unbelievable with the exception of one day in two weeks, water temp about 76 with the air between 73 and 80. Our Toyota 4runner enjoyed it although the neighbors got stuck and paid $150 to get out. You'll be very happy with this rental

My wife and I loved our stay at Tranquility. What a fantastic view and great accomodations. We saw the horses every day. We stayed at the end of September and the beach was "ours".

Don't under estimate the requirements for driving in the sand even in a 4 X 4. Lower the air in your tires to 15 to 20 lbs. They will look flat but you can go anywhere. I had to get stuck and have a tow before I let the air out. Take heed!

Beautiful house, but 4x4 access only

Great views, lovely and comfortable house, beautiful beach. But don't underestimate the difficulty of getting there. You have to drive for 3 miles in soft, rutted sand along the ocean front. It takes some skill and some care not to get stuck. You MUST have decent 4-wheel drive and will have to lower air pressure in your tires before entering the beach. Once you "get it," it's fine, though you won't be making multiple trips to town every day. It also means that when your sitting on the beach, you have to position yourself out of traffic flow.
When you get there, though, it's certainly worth it if you enjoy peace, quiet and the ocean.
