Beyond Expectations

m. from brooklyn New York City
Review Submitted: January 7, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
I rented The Old Chestnut over New Year's Eve week after getting frustrated with lack of rental availability and exorbitant prices in the Catskills. I had a large party to accommodate (16 adults) and needed access to MetroNorth or Amtrak from NYC, so my options were limited. Although CT was not my intended destination I cannot imagine how we could have done better than our wonderful experience at the "OC". Every single person was thrilled with the house and the grounds - and very sad to leave.

The owners are easy to work with and have set the house up in a way that instantly makes a guest feel at home. The house is made up of large spaces where your whole group can gather together comfortably, yet still has enough space to spread out and get away from the group if need be. The house truly accommodates up to 20 people very comfortably, but the configuration of the bedrooms may not work for everyone (fortunately, I worked perfectly for us). If you like to cook, the Chestnut's kitchen is a major asset! You would be hard pressed to find a house with more character. The pictures do not do this house justice.

Some our group went in for local activities like hiking, skiing, winter birding and some of us never left the property - we all had a great time and would love to come back if we can ever get all 16 of us in one place at the same time! I'll treasure my time at The Old Chestnut!
Owner's Response: We are thoroughly pleased that the Old Chestnut proved to be an exceptional time for you. Thank you for putting so well in writing what our guests verbally express. We look forward to hosting you and your group again - hopefully in the not-too-distant future!

A great escape with friends or family!

DJZ Morristown, New Jersey
Review Submitted: November 24, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
I have stayed at the Old Chestnut Inn many times in recent years. I go there regularly with friends and colleagues and can do nothing but rave about the experience.

The house, located on a beautiful pond, not far from the town of Kent, is a treat at all times of years. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and I'm not sure if my favorite time is in the spring when there are a profusion of daffodils and tulips, the summer with all of the lillies in bloom, the fall when the leaves are changing, or the middle of winter, looking out at the snow while sitting inside with friends by the fireplace. At whatever time we go, though, the house and grounds are always welcoming, and the owners are very friendly and accomodating.

Inside, the house has great New England charm. It is well maintained and clean, and we have always found the sleeping accomodations to be very comfortable when we are a small or a larger group. One of our favorite things are long evenings sitting around the dinner table with a glass of wine. (There's a wonderful kitchen to cook in, but if you can afford it - absolutely indulge in letting their cook do the cooking for you. Her food is consistently wonderful, and she accomodates our various tastes and dietary needs!)

In sum, I would recommend staying at the Old Chestnut Inn very highly with groups of friends or family. It's a treat. Thank you to the owners!

Best spot for a wedding, party or retreat!

Patti-Jo New York NY
Review Submitted: November 21, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Our group has visited the Old Chestnut every year for the past 9 years and every year we just hate to leave! The house itself is spectacular and is maintained extremely well. The owners pay careful attention to detail and make sure that you have everything you need for your stay. A friendly caretaker is just next door should you need anything while you are there. The lovely kitchen is equipped with just about anything you could possibly want and is spacious and easy to work in. The living room with it's large fireplace is cozy and inviting. A speaker system from the upstairs sound system allows you to pipe in music easily. The dining room with its Shaker table and chairs can be configured to accomodate a large or small group easily. Also, the large table on the back porch, overlooking the pond, is great for dining with a view. The bedrooms are nicely furnished and are set up for you with linens and towels -- do be prepared for some sharing -- three bedrooms will accomodate singles or couples while two have 3 beds in them and the downstairs large room can sleep up to 7. Because of the spacious and flexible layout, we have easily accomodated up to 20 people without any sense of being on top of each other. The grounds, too, are beautifully maintained and a joy to be in...the pond is fun for swimming and it's proximity to the house makes it easy to use. The nature trail on the grounds adds a feeling of being way out in the woods even though you are really just a mile and a quarter from the center of town of Kent with all its cute shops and nice restaurants. We usually rent bikes in town and bike around the countryside of Kent -- just lovely! That combination of being out in the country yet still close to "civilization" is part of what makes the Old Chestnut so special. Our group stays at the Old Chestnut for a workshop, but I wish I had known about it when I got married because I think that this would be an ideal place for a wedding -- or any other kind of large party! Hmm, maybe I'll start planning for my next big birthday party there.......

A Beautiful Place

A very satisfied renter West Hartford, CT
Review Submitted: November 18, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2009
I have rented this home 6 times in the past 15 years as a place to hold a professional seminar over a long weekend. It has always been well maintained and comfortable for the group members and for me.

In the winter we enjoy the coziness of the large stone fireplace, and in the other seasons the lovely grounds call us outside on our breaks. We especially love to sit on the porch and enjoy the view of the pond and the lawns beyond it.

If you choose to hire their chef, as I do, you will be amazed at the gourmet quality of the meals she serves.

I highly recommend staying here.
Owner's Response: We are so pleased to be able to provide you and your guests with exactly what you need and we look forward to your next stay with us.

Want to relax? Don't think about staying here

poopoo new york
Review Submitted: November 6, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
The photos are accurate, the thing they do not tell you is that they are taken from the back of the house. The write up says how it is nestled in the woods. If you consider the front door 15 feet from the main hxy, then they are mistaken. You will hear trafic all hours in any part of the house. This does not make sleeping a joy at all. We brought our dogs and were terrified they would run into the hwy at any moment. These things should be told to any possible guest with pets or children. There are no gates just a busy hwy.

If you go in the summer time i would suggest you bring your own portable a/c. They do have air in the house but it is poor. So if you want a sauna then i sugest you sleep upstairs. So we decided to sleep downstairs on single hard beds that were damp from being in the basement.

After we had a great night sleep right !!! We wanted to take a shower. Just to find that every towel in the house was sopping wet folded on beds. So no shower for us, until we washed and dried laundry.

Not our Idea of a great way to start our vacation.

After breakfast was made then we went to the porch. With in seconds we heard the weed waker and the gas fumes coming up and choking us. forget about enjoying your breakfast looking at the pond and nature. So we go inside jsut to have the groundkeeper start the gas leaf blower. We had asked him to stop and he just kept blowing and said it needed to be done. If that was not bad enough then he gets on the riding lawd mower and mowed for hours. We finally had to leave since the noise was so bad.
.
If i would have known any of these things i would have never wasted our time.

We left after 3 days to go back home to salvage the rest of our vacation. You would think going to the courty would be great away from the city and the noise.

There are many other things about the place i could mention. From no papter towels to having to hook up our our propain tank to the grill that the care taker just handed to me and said have at it.

I would not even give this place a 1 on the poor list i would rate it a - 0
Owner's Response: I am very surprised to have received this written negative review for two reasons: 99% of our guests are inordinately pleased with their experience at our property and often return, and, it is 2.5 months after the stay. The guest did write to me directly at the time. I investigated his complaints and, despite finding conflicting evidence, I took this guest's displeasures to heart and gave him a partial refund. In addition I did not charge him for damage done by one, or both, of the dogs. He seemed to accept our communications and the refund in the spirit of resolution. We work hard in maintaining a beautiful, warm and welcoming property where guests can meet with family and friends for a relaxing and enjoyable time and leave with a sense of satisfaction and joy. However, as one owner wrote, it is humanly impossible to please everyone all of the time.
