La Casa Cielo, crested on five acres high above the rural island of Culebra, is more than a home... it's a Celebration! This 100-foot long Caribbean home overlooking the private cove, Mosquito Bay, was built 7 years ago by the noted designer, William Maer. Mr. Maer who is widely known for his insistence that almost good is not good enough, sited the house to take full advantage of the views and the trade winds. La Casa Cielo is considered one of the most beautiful rental homes on the island. A St Thomas deck and roof surrounds La Casa Cielo which lends itself to gracious indoor and outdoor living. Watching the cruise ships go sailing by, watching the hummingbirds testing the nectar of the Royal Ponciana trees and hearing the wild horses munching on the fruit trees is an important part of the home. The all-equipped kitchen with its dramatic marble island was designed to inspire the cook with an unobstructed 360-degree view of St. Thomas to the East and the big island of Puerto Rico to the West. Nearby are beaches for snorkeling and scuba, beaches for sea kayaking and beaches for seeing and being seen. From the house it is only a 5 to 10 minute walk to Zoni Beach. Besides the usual linens, dishware and barware, the house comes equipped with bar-b-que, beach chairs, beach towels, thermos, and a fully equipped sea kayak.

I just returned from this property. It appears that it has been updated from the review of March. There was a new 18 inch mattress in the master bedroom, new covers and freshly painted. There were two new fans, as a recall in the sleep deck and in the main living room. Each room smelled of new paint, so I can only assume the house has been updated. I also had a problem with the dryer until I realized I had to put quarters in, (that were provided) to make it run. I truly enjoyed the DVD's that were provided, and didn't need a satelite dish, as I had the internet to connect to the news. The beach was magical, as the snorkeling. Its a place that allows you to sit back and have all of your problems melt away. I was greeted at the airport by Maria, and she drove me to the car rental place, then I followed her to the property. I found the property spotless. Maria was available to me the entire stay. I would go again

house is not as described

We rented this house last winter. Ok, where to start? There was a dead rat in the kitchen when we arrived. It was behind a locked pantry door, and the housekeeper did not respond to our calls, so eventually, one of us had to climb over the wall to remove it because of the smell. The dryer didn't work. The washer and dryer were kept in a locked closet anyway, so we couldn't access even washer, except when the housekeeper came once to wash our sheets. She hung them out to dry, which didn't work very well because it was raining. One of the bathroom doors was locked shut, so we had to share the bedroom bathrooms. The louvered shutters in master bathroom were broken and stuck in place, so the room was dark and windy. The downstairs bedroom smelled like urine. There was no dvd, internet access, cable or satellite. The house is not walking distance to Zoni beach, as described in the listing, but rather a 20-25 minute drive.
4-wheel drive needed. The main reason we chose this house was because of the advertised proximity to Zoni, and when I spoke with the owner to make arrangements, I asked specifically about this. Our number one requirement for a house was that it be walking distance to a swimming beach. The owner assured me that Zoni beach was very close, and accessible by just a short 5 to 10 minute walk down a trail right from the house. In fact, Zoni is way down the other end of the island, about a 20-25 minute drive away. We ended up having to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get to it, or any of the swimmable beaches. The owner was completely unresponsive to our complaints.

On the plus side, the house is beautifully sited, with gorgeous views, and very spacious. It is actually a beautiful house, just seriously in need of maintenance and a good thorough cleaning. If the house were described more accurately in the listing, and in a much lower price range, it could be a great place to stay. But, it is definitely not a luxury or high-end rental, and it should not be priced as one.

Views, hummingbirds and spacious decks

Spacious living and dining areas. Large master bedroom with huge bathroom. Second bedroom is on ground floor -- hot in mid-day but cool at night. No oven in kitchen, but who is going to bake anyway?
Bring drinking water.
Awesome views. Hummingbirds and "la Reinita" from breakfast area.
Recommend four-wheel drive for access.
Very close to Zoni Beach. Quiet.
No cable but good supply of classic DVD's
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Girls Getaway, Families with Teenagers, Romantic Getaway

Not all that is promised

The views are impressive with St Thomas on one side and Vieques on the other. Only one room was air-conditioned(very noisy). The stereo was a boom box with radio and non-working cassete deck. The TV was new, but no cable or sat dish; no conventional oven either. There were holes in the sheets, and the washer was not working. The house was clean. We loved the island, but it is very quiet in terms of night life. You absolutely need a car preferably 4 wheel drive. The house needed maintance( a ceiling fan in the dining area, warded doors, older George Forman grill-needed to broil).
Recommended for:  Tourists without a Car
