Nearest Beach: beach at 0.1 Miles
Other than just relaxing and enjoying the amazing view, there are a variety of nearby activities. On the beach in front of the house, the fossil hunting is fantastic. You will find all types of fossils (sharks teeth, ray teeth, fossilized coral, etc.) from the Miocene era (10-20 million years ago). There is very good hiking in the area at Calvert Cliffs, Flag Pond, Cypress Swamp, and many other nearby parks. Many of the hikes are kid-friendly. Boating and fishing are also very popular activities. There is a marina just down the beach from our house. Explore Solomon's Island, just 15 minutes down the road. Take a trip to historic St. Mary's City. There's is so much to see and do, most of which can be found in a book we have compiled that is kept at the house.

This is a great rental house on the beach.

I'm not sure if "Chief Cook & Bottlewasher" has the right house. A friend and I stayed here in September 2008 and loved it. The comments about the "magnificent water view" and the house being "spacious and well-equipped" are correct. The negative comments, though, are just not accurate.

While there were only 2 of us there, the house can definitely accommodate 10. We had a hard time deciding which master suite to stay in. The top floor master suite offers incredible views of the bay, while the main floor master suite is a little more intimate. As for the lower level, which is actually at ground level, and has glass doors that open onto the back yard, it's huge! There's a very comfortable sofa (I think it's a sofabed) and large TV/DVD where we watched movies. The third bedroom (on the lower level) is pretty small, but has 2 twins and 2 trundles under them. I checked it out because I may return with my extended family. I figured we would roll the 2 trundle beds out of the lower level bedroom and into the large open area where the sofabed and TV are. I think the teen and younger kids would love it down there.

In the great room on the main floor, the sectional sofas are really comfortable. The dining room table is huge and just beautiful. (I think it's Stickley.) The kitchen is great (it even has a water view), and very well equipped. There's what looks to be a new refrigerator and dishwasher, and a trash compactor, which is older but worked just fine.

The beach in front of the house is terrific. We really enjoyed the sharks teeth hunting. (We found some sifters and wading boots in the garage, though you can find them just walking on the beach.) We later learned at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomon's Island that the sharks teeth are about 10 million years old! While the beach is a little narrow, we enjoyed a nice long, peaceful walk one morning.

This is a great house, in a great spot. I will definitely be coming back, and will try and have an extended family gathering here too.

Beautiful Setting but House Needs Attention

Review Submitted: September 17, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2007
If you enjoy birdwatching, observing boats, and taking in the every-changing Chesapeake Bay, you will love the deck overlooking the water. The beach at this location is narrow, so beachwalking and swimming are probably best at the nearby state park.

While the house is spacious and well-equipped, it is definitely not suitable for 10 people unless the group includes small children. The third bedroom is tiny and the sofa bed in the den is very uncomfortable, so don't plan on any adults staying in the lower level.

The house is large and has lots of windows. The second master is a loft that is up a flight of stairs. There is a large dining room table and the kitchen is well-stocked with dinnerware and cookware.

The furnishings in the living room need upgrading, especially the lighting, which is inadequate. The area rug under the dining room table was quite dirty when we were there. The dishwasher and garbage compactor did not work well (we gave up on the compactor entirely).

In short, this house is a great base for activities and sightseeing and offers a truly magnificent water view, but it's not really suitable for more than 4 adults and a couple of teenagers or 4 adults and children between the ages of 4 and 10 who would be safe sleeping alone in the lower level of the house. Also, the living room furniture should be upgraded and several kitchen appliances should be replaced.
