'Altares' is a stunning contemporary house with views of the ocean through the pine trees that fill its neighborhood, Pinares. The spacious sunken living room is triangular with one wall of windows; one, of field stone; and the base open to the entryway and mezzanine. In the stone wall is a large fireplace. The house was built for outdoor living, with a west-facing terrace off the mezzanine TV room; two patios outside the living room; and an outdoor, covered barbecue (quincho) with an Uruguayan fireplace for cooking and dining. Looking down the street from the front door, you can see the ocean, which is two blocks away. At the foot of the street is the Playa Mansa, a calm beach on a protected stretch of ocean. A mile and half up the coast road is the urban peninsula of Punta del Este with its restaurants, shops, and marina. Beyond Punta del Este are beaches with bigger waves, and the artists' communities of La Barra and Jose Ignacio. The house is ideal for a long stay.

Punta del Este is a vacation area on the Atlantic Coast of Uruguay. It is in a beautiful area with hills falling down to the sea. The bays and points of the region form beaches on all kinds of water, from placid to wild. During the summer high season, mid-December to mid-March, vacationers crowd into Punta del Este and many beachfront activities are available, for example windsurfing. Summer restaurants are open. The jazz festival in January is an annual event. For the rest of the year, the area is very quiet, great for walking on the beach, looking at the plentiful local wildlife (birds, seals, whales in the winter), barbecuing, enjoying beautiful sunsets. There are many artists living in the area around Punta del Este, and several art galleries and museums. The important town of Maldonado is about 10 minutes away by car, and provides a wide variety of services and shopping. Uruguay's capital city, Montevideo, is one and a half hours away.

Notes: The stairs to the loft are made of old railroad ties and are an intrinsic part of the design of the living area. They do not have a railing. It is necessary to be very careful when going up or down those stairs. The loft is a comfortable area for watching TV, with a sofa and upholstered chair.
