Loon Island is connected by a strip of beach to the North shore of Lake Bonaparte. The rustic but electrified compound is centered around the hunting camp our grandfather started in the 1920's. Now days, there is a second cottage, a little cedar sleeping cabin and a former ice house converted to a somewhat nicer sleeping cabin. Park on the mainland and walk a hundred yards up to your headquarters, carrying all food and personal items, including towels and bed linens, but not the kitchen and bathroom essentials. We are as tolerant of pets as we are of people, but no smoking, No fireworks, No kidding. 1/2 of rental fee to make a reservation with no refund after June 1 and final payment due 2 weeks before rental date. If you ever want to leave Loon Island, where the favorite occupations for those of us who can stop working, are watching and reading, you can wade, swim, paddle and fish away, and if you must leave Bonaparte itself you are already within a few miles of the largest wilderness area of the Adirondack area, including many miles of flat water river for canoe travel, and the largest piece of mature virgin forest in the North Eastern U.S.

Bonaparte: Lake Bonaparte (at one time the domain of Napolean's brother Joseph, who had lost his kingship of Spain) is a clear, clean lake, low in acid and rich in plant, insect and fish life. From Loon Island you can wade right in from our sand beach. If you would rather catch fish than join them, you will be most successful in the cooler weather.
