Best skiing in SW! Downhill skiing at Timberline and Canaan, X-country at White Grass, Canaan and Blackwater Falls State Park. Canaan Valley is a unique ecosystem. It's like a piece of Vermont was plunked down into West Virginia. It's the highest elevation valley of its size, east of Denver. There are a great variety of birds all-year round in the Valley, and a great variety of unique flora and fauna. The Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge is habitat to over 150 bird species, a major flyover in Spring and Fall. The night sky has little light pollution. Popular attractions include Blackwater Falls State Park, the historic towns of Davis and Thomas featuring Mountainmade with its fine arts & crafts , the Purple Fiddle with its unique alt -country music. Also nearby: Dolly Sods, Monaghahela National Forest, Cathedral State Park (old growth forest), Spruce Knob, and world-class rock climbing at Seneca Rocks. Both Spruce Knob and Seneca also have family-friendly, large caves to explore.

So, all in all, eight people can sleep in the bedrooms, plus two people/kids could share the sleeper-sofa in the Great Room (if they are OK with no privacy), or people can sleep in the carpeted rec-room downstairs, with its own TV, if you bring sleeping bags or air mattresses.

Hike or Ski Your Heart Out!: Most guests say, ''it's even better than the pictures!' Great to just get away and relax, have fun with all sorts of out-door adventures in warm and cold weather. Ski in winter, hike, bike and kayak in warm weather. Horseback riding minutes away, world-class rock climbing about 1/2 hour away. Many, many local activities. Located in the beautiful Allegheny Mountains. Great Family Winter Vacation in Canaan Valley or Cozy Romantic Getaway in West Virginia. Excellent spot to explore various day-hikes. Nearby Davis West Virginia was voted by Men's Health as one of the coolest little mountain towns in the country.

Upcoming Attractions for September: THE MAPLE/RED LEAVES ARE ALREADY STARTING TO CHANGE. LEAF PEEPERS FESTIVAL THE LAST WEEKEND OF SEPTEMBER WILL BE AWESOME!

Ski: Downhill skiing only 5 minutes away at Timberline and Canaan Valley Resort. Canaan Valley Resort also has fun tubing for the kiddies. White Grass, with its great cafe and friendly Chipper (you have to ask), as well as Blackwater Falls, for Nordic skiing, are about 10 minutes away.

Golf: Canaan State Park, five minutes away, has a wonderful course. There is always lots of wildlife nearby, including deer on the green.

Other Activities: canoeing, kayaking, live-music listening, snow sports in winter

My family found this place charming, clean and well-kept. The kitchen is well-equipped, the decorations appropriate for the mountain setting, and the view very beautiful. The property is centrally located -- to the north are the towns of Davis and Thomas, as well as Blackwater Falls State Park, and to the south are Canaan Valley State Park and Dolly Sods, as well as Timberline, for those skiiing in the winter. The place is small enough for one family to feel cozy, yet large enough for two families to comfortably fit. I definitely recommend this property.

Great Value

I've rented several places in Canaan Valley through the years, and, overall, I'd say this was the best value. The views of the Valley from out back are really nice, they've done a good job equipping the place and making it comfortable. It's big enough for two families, but not too big for one. The beds were very comfortable. I'll be a repeat renter.

Just so so.

The description of this property I believe was inaccurate in regards to several things. The location is very nice and the view is good. The layout of the house is good and the kitchen is very adequate. I did feel that the house is not being maintained as well as it should be. There were not enough towels and we were told that there were plenty of towels there. Had we known we could have taken some towels. The Hot tub is very nice, but the Hot tub area is in need of some work. When I arrived I swept the area of lots of bugs and cob webs and debri before using the hot tub. The owner told us there was internet service and we were not able to get service at all. We had to go to a nearby coffee shop to get service. This was not so bad, but we should have been told this.
The sight said also that soap and that sort of thing was provided, and it wasn't.
This could be a very nice property with some minor work. When I stay somewhere on vacation, I like to sleep on a comfortable bed and nice sheets, have clean smelling towels, etc. New, better quality sheets and towels would definitely improve this property a great deal.
Owner's Response: I appreciate the positive comments in this review. I have shared the review with my housekeeper. We are usually well-stocked with soaps and towels, and overwhelmingly get positive comments about cleanliness. While I have never had a negative comment about the sheets or towels previously, I have just ordered additional high-count cotton thread sheets and new spa towels. I have the impression that this person's stay was marred by the fact that he could not get internet service. I state on the site that the internet connection is sporadic, and I tell everyone this who asks me about internet. If regular internet service during your vacation and at the property is important to you, please take note of this.

Wonderful house, great location, quiet, but with neighbors close enough just in case. Beautiful home with nice deck, great view, and hot tub. Open layout of kitchen, dining room and living area with wood stove made for a cozy and lazy romantic weekend. Small towns of Davis and Thomas provided just enough of an outing with decent food to keep us happy. All the amenities you could want! Dog friendly too!!! A wonderfully maintained property! We wanted for nothing!

Lovely Cottage!

Excellent View of Valley! We spent a lot of time relaxing in the hot tub enjoying the valley. Close to everything. The place looks small from the outside but had more than enough room for our two families on spring break. The cottage was spacious and well kept. The beds were comfortable and the decor made for a perfect setting. The kitchen is setup so you can get groceries and cook most of your meals. Good appliances and plenty of cook/flatware. The only thing we needed was a X-Large pot to make a huge soup in. We plan on making this valley and this cottage a common location for future vacations. Here is a list of things that we did during of stay: Skiing at Timberland, Tubing at Canaan, Horseback riding at Mtn Trail Rides, Ice Skating at Canaan Conf Ctr, Cave hiking at Smokey Hole Caverns, Hiking at Canaan Conf Ctr and Blackwater Falls (we stopped counting deer after 115), Wandered the street of Davis and Thomas (don't miss the Purple Fiddle). All in all a great place to visit and a great place to stay.
