Private Lake Paradise. High on a cliff overlooking 1000's of acres with clear unobstructed views of pinon and pine trees forests, wildflowers, and the amethyst Brazos Cliffs, 30 minutes south is where Georgia O'Keeffe lived and was inspired by the raw beauty of the desert and Pedernal mesa. There is a wraparound deck to take in the sweeping panoramic vista. Heron Lake is an oasis for swimming, fishing, and boating;No wake lake so just sailboats, canoes and no wake fishing craft. Perfect for writing, painting,hanging out, meditating, socializing, swimming or boating in the lake (bring your own boat or rent one at Stone Lake Lodge), or simply sightseeing and hiking in the nearby mountains. It's sunny year-round; not too hot in summer, cool breezes and hummingbirds abound in the evenings. The elevation is 6,700.

Located just west of Tierra Amarilla and the weaving village of Los Ojos. Many nearby activities including, wildlife and bird watching, mountain biking, running, walking, fishing (Trout and Kokanee Salmon), sailing, day spa Ojo Caliente. Peaceful sanctuary with extraordinary wildlife viewing. The ranch backs to 1,000's of acre elk preserve. Willow Creek and Lake Heron are just down the road. Sunrises, sunsets and star gazing are spectacular. Lake Heron is a 'quiet Lake' with canoes, sail boats, swimming and fishing. Besure to bring a camera the views are the best Northern New Mexico has to offer. For water skiing, drive just 10 miles to El Vado Lake and let the noisy fun begin. Short day trips could be Georgia O'Keefes Abiqui and Ghost Ranch, Echo Natural Amphitheatre, Ojo Caliente Hot Springs Day Spa, Santa Fe to the South. Taos to the west. Chama is 20 minutes away and is home to the Toltec and Cumbres Scenic Railroad. Get a sense of what travel used to be like.

Notes: Basically you may use the fishing poles to fish. There is usually bait at the Heron Store or in Tierra Amarilla at Henry's Hardware. I have found orange powerbait to be great for trout. Also corn works well. I can also give you the location of a great fishing spot. Children and elderly must be careful on the deck. Although there is a good solid railing there is a 15' drop to the ground. Extreme caution is urged. We do not have a wheelchair ramp to the deck.

Surrounded by natural beauty: Cumbres Toltec Railroad nearby in Chama, NM. Tierra Wools nearby in Los Ojos, NM. Fishing nearby on the private side of Heron Lake and Willow Creek. Georgia O'Keefes Abiqui and Ghost Ranch as well as Ojo Caliente Hot Mineral Springs and Spa are about an hour away. Taos, Taos Pueblo and the Taos Gorge Bridge is 1.0 hours to the east, Unwind, decompress, get away from it all except perhaps KTAO's Joseph the Starwatchers' daily horoscope. Great area for families as well as reunions and retreats of any kind.

what a view and hummingbird paradise

Pictures do not do this cabin's view justice, you have to see it in person. The wrap around deck has 3 hummingbird feeders. We spent much of our time watching "hummingbird TV." The birds are so used to folks that many of them will land on your finger to drink. The home itself is well equipped with all you might need. Took us 3 days to figure out there was no A/C because even in the middle of August there was no need for A/C. This is an ideal place for those who want to get away from it all for awhile. Make sure to book a fishing trip with Don Wolfley at Herron Lake, we caught 32 Salmon in 7 hours. Take a hike and check out the deer, ground squirrels, and elk. Few bobcat prints too!

Only concern we had was the need to clean up after ourselves before we left. This was not told to us in advance.

Spectacular View

My wife and I as well as our 2 dogs spent a week here in mid-August 2009. The view from the deck is awesome, better than words can describe. The surrounding woods are great for hiking and Lake Heron is right next door. The cabin itself is very nice and clean and the hummingbirds are very entertaining (they will keep you busy feeding them). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will plan on returning next year. This place is perfect for anybody who would like to get away from it all and have some peaceful time.
