'Footprints in the Sand' where Wild Horses roam all year along the ocean and graze in the cottage yard. There's an occasional sighting of a whale migrating south. Geese, ducks, pelicans and dolphins abound. The 4 WD area is truly an adventure. And although the area is secluded this owner/contractor built cottage is well-equipped with comfortable extras; professionally decorated with beautiful furnishings, custom cabinets, granite and marble tops and tile. Two levels of decks provide magnificent views of sunrises and sunsets. The large hot tub and sun-room are crowd favorites. New in 2008 is a heater on the gorgeous 14' X 40' pool with large deck and furniture.

' Footprints in the Sand' Cottage is only 3 miles from the hardtop road. In 20 minutes you can be in the Corolla- Monteray Plaza and Tim Buck II enjoying movies, restaurants, buying groceries and souvenirs. A little farther down the road is the quaint town of Duck with more specialty shops and restaurants. Climb up the Currituck Lighthouse, see the newly renovated historic Whale Head Club. Shop in The Historic Corolla Village, travel 30 minutes to Kitty Hawk to see Wright Bros. Memorial, Climb Jockey's Ridge the biggest sand dune on the east coast. Cape Hatteras and Oracoke are terrific day trips. Enjoy the water sports on the sound- wind surfing, jet ski, para sail, canoe.

Fishing: This area is renowned for great fishing. It is home to a vast number of species- striped bass, flounder, red and black drum, marlin, cobia, trout, tuna, spot and croaker. Surf fish, fish in the sound, and deep sea fishing are all available.

Four Lighthouses: The Currituck Lighthouse, Bodie Lighthouse, Cape Hatterras, and Oracoke Lighthouse are all within a few hours driving distance. The lighthouse keepers houses and Currituck and Hatteras are open to the public. The Currituck light is visible from the cottage at night.

Wild Horses in the 4 Wheel Drive area: Most days horses are visible on the beach and in the yards of cottages. The Wild Horse Association maintains about 50 horses that roam freely and feed on the vegetation. The Corolla Wild Horses are believed to have roamed the Ouer Banks for more than 4 centuries. These amazing animals are descendants of Spanish Mustangs. There are several tour companies that will take you to see the horses in the 4 WD area. But if you stay in a cottage in this area you may wake up to find horses with their foals in the yard!

We stayed at Footprints in the Sand in August 2009. We had a wonderful week! The layout of the house was perfect for our group,we had 6 adults and 2 children. The house is beautiful with plenty of room to spread out. The pool and hot tub were a big hit!! We saw lots of wildlife, horses, pelicans, crabs, jellyfish and the adorable tree frogs. We drove to the beach everyday which was great. It was a little to far for the two children to walk. The drive took no more than 5 minutes. The trip was fantastic, I would definately recommend this property to anyone!! My only advice would be to not wash anything light colored. I washed a load of light blue towels and ended up with some rust/iron? stains. Also bring plenty of drinking water becuse the water does have a sulpher smell.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Girls Getaway, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway

4X4 vacation

The house was very nice and the pool (with heating) was wonderful. Without the pool, I'm not sure we would have enjoyed vacationing here since there were two small children with us and it was some distance from the beach (too far to walk). Also, no one tells you about the horse flies and other biting flies common in this area. Positives were that it was much less congested than other areas of the beach and we spent quality time together as a family. You definitely need a substantial 4X4 in this area; we saw lots of people stuck in the sand. The towing company keeps a truck or two in this area around the clock.
Recommended for:  Families with Teenagers
Owner's Response: If you are a first time 4 X 4 vacationer, a higher sitting 4-wheel drive vehicle is advantageous. As with any body of water, flies and mosquitoes are possible. We are approximatley 650 feet from the ocean and many families enjoy driving their vehicles with all "their " beach stuff and cooler with them to the beach. The pristine and quiet atmosphere of the 4-wheel drive area is made possible by not having paved roads. With a little practice most people find driving becomes easy and enjoyable in the sand. Lowering tire pressure to 18# makes driving much, much easier, also.

Perfect Vacation Getaway

This was one of the most relaxing vacations I have been on! The house is beautiful and private. There is no traffic and no crowds, only the relaxing beach scenery and the sounds of nature. In fact, during our stay we had several sitings of wild horses. Although quiet, there is excellent dining and shopping only a short drive away. The house is very spacious and very well maintained. The pool located in the back of the house is fenced in, which made it perfect for children. Near the pool is also a charcoal grill which made great dinners. Evenings that we didn't eat out we bought fresh seafood at the local markets and enjoyed a family dinner. The kitchen was fitted with every accessory needed to prepare a seafood dinner. Our vacation was perfect.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Pet-friendly, Girls Getaway, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway
