Kandy is the Hill Capital of Sri Lanka nestling among the misty hills in the central region of the island. It is classed as a World Heritage City by UNESCO and is the most visited city in Sri Lanka for tourists and local people because the shrine holding the sacred tooth relic of the lord Buddha is placed in the heart of the city. Kandy is also the venue of the Esala Perahera, easily the most colourful pageant of Asia, held in July/August each year, in honour of the tooth relic. The torch-lit streets are filled with elephants and costumed dancers. Kandy is 45 minutes drive away from the world famous Victoria Golf Club and and the elephant orphanage. There are other outdoor activities within easy reach such as white water rafting and hiking. It is also a good base from which to visit the many other attractions in Sri Lanka such as the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polunnaruwa, the rock temple at Dambulla and Sigirya, the lion mountain.

Excellent holoday

Our 3rd visit to Kandy and the House on the Rock. Kandy is a great place for touring around, there is such a lot to see and do - and the nights are much cooler here than on the West Coast or in Colombo, so sleeping is easier! If you are worried about the troubles in Sri Lanka - don't be - there are road blocks here and there, but all the trouble is in the far north of the island. We didn't have a problem. This time we had a friend who cannot eat chillies and Mrs M. prepared the same food for her , but without the chillies - absolutely scrumptious she said. She is also a vegetarian and was never short of a choice of wonderful dishes. The hotel Thilanka at the bottom of the road does a wonderful buffet for about £3.50 - and the 5 star Earls Regency not far away also does one for around £5.00. If you eat in the hotels( plenty of 4 & 5 star to choose from) you can usually use the pools free - most have spectacular views too. This time we wanted to visit the famous Cultural Triangle and we asked the owner to recommend a reasonably priced hotel, which he did. We stayed at the Gimanhala Transit Hotel in Dambulla. It was very reasonably priced, and the pool and restaurant look out over open countryside at the rear. Excellent food too. We loved the new bird baths and all the other improvements to the house and garden. Thanks for yet another memorable holiday - we will be back - most definately.

Great house, fantastic views, brilliant food

Review Submitted: April 27, 2008 Date of Stay: February 2008
This was our third stay at this property, so we like it! Having stayed in other houses in Sri Lanka, we find that the House on the Rock is clean and well maintained. Kandy is in the middle of Sri Lanka, so this is a brilliant base from which to explore.

The owners very pleasant mother lives next door (she speaks English too) and can provide a taxi service or genuine home cooked Sri Lankan meals should you need them. She is an excellent cook - we just loved her food. One of our family does not like hot spicy food and she managed to make the same tasty meal for her, but without the hot chillies and hot spices.

We loved the improvements to the garden. It is a delight to see the stunning views, the exotic bird life and just relax under the mango tree.

The Thilanka Hotel at the bottom of the hill has a wonderful help yourself buffet each evening for 375 Sri Lankan rupees per person. The dining terrace here overlooks the lake in Kandy, which is very pretty. This hotel also has an Ayurvedic centre set in the pretty gardens. I thought I was going into Bilbo's hut! What an experience, but I did come out feeling very relaxed.

There are many 5 star hotels around and you can eat in any one of them, or use the swimming pool (there is usually a small charge for this), even though you are not a guest. We found this very useful with our non curry eating family member. She ate European food, we ate the curries - all of it delicious and amazingly inexpensive.

Kandy is a fascinating place, in a stunning setting. The colonial cemetary at the rear of the temple is very interesting - the guide is very knowledgeable and brings the people to life again. And the temple dancing and firewalking in the evening is another 'must do'.

Further afield, the archaeological site of Polonnaruwa must be seen, also Sigirya with it's ancient remains of a palace and water gardens.

Car Hire is expensive, far cheaper to either use the little 3 wheelers which are everywhere/hire a taxi/hire the owners Mum and car.

We love this location, and the friendly Sri Lankan people - we shall return.
