My C&O Caboose is located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia near Natural Bridge and Lexington. It is a restored 'woody' caboose which was retired from the C&O railroad in the late 1970's after more than 60 years of service as the quarters for train crews in the coal fields of West Virginia. It has undergone extensive renovation and now is a unique vacation rental near the beautiful Natural Bridge and the historic valley town of Lexington. I have the exterior restored to what the car probably looked like in the 1930's. The interior has been extensively renovated to include a bedroom with double sized captains bed with memory foam mattress and drawers built into it's base. This bed was custom made for the caboose by an Amish furniture maker in Ohio. The bath has a shower and pedestal sink and is located under the original cupola which is still accessible via rungs on the wall of the hall. Smaller children might like to go up here or even sleep up in the cupola. 'All Aboard!!! Tom

Nearest Airport: Roanoke at 35 Miles
Natural Bridge in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia is a scenic wonder. Nearby is the Virginia Safari Park and the Natural Bridge Zoo. The Washington-Jefferson National Forest is in the area. The Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail are close by, as well. Historic Lexington where Gen. Lee and Stonewall Jackson lived, The Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University are here. Day trips to Monticello, Appomattox, Poplar Forest, Skiing at Wintergreen or Massanuttin or visit the O. Winston Link Museum in Roanoke. Many of Virginias Wineries are in range for day trips. Canoeing or tubing are popular local activities.

Notes: The caboose is small, only about 200 square feet. I have made every effort to use all the space effectively and to make it comfortable. The brick patio has a gas grill, a gas hobo fire, and railroad depot type benches. There are railroad type lanterns to light the patio in the evening. Children may be able to sleep up in the cupola- it is only 5 feet by five feet and 2 feet high. The daybed can be used by one person but it is only 2 feet wide. Small children should plan on bringing their sleeping bags. If you have questions, call me. I am available until 8PM!

Memories are made in this beautiful area!!: Your visit to this beautiful area of Virginia and the Caboose will be one you will remember and cherish. There are many activities in the Rockbridge County area and many day trips should be planned as well. Cave Mountain Lake in the National Forest is always a pleasure in the Summer. Fishing in the National Forest, on the James River or at Lake Robertson Is a popular activity. Virginia Safari Park is 2 miles. Natural Bridge and the Natural Bridge Caverns are 2 miles. Day trips to Montecello in Charlottesville, or Appomattox and of course Lexington are popular. Hiking on our many trails including the Appalachain Trail appeals to many of our guests. Others enjoy the Blue Ridge parkway or the WWII memorial in Bedford 30 minutes away.

Historic Lexington is 10 minutes: Lexington has great restaurants, historic sites, carriage rides, tours, Civil war sites are nearby. Robert E. Lee Chapel and Museum, Stonewall Jackson House, George C. Marshall museum, VMI Cadet parades at 4 pm on Fridays, cadet museum etc. Cyrus McCormick Farm and workshop at Steeles Tavern. Wades Mill nearby here is popular.

C&O Railroad Historical Society: Clifton Forge -about 40 minutes has the C&O Historical Society headquarters and museum. Roanoke-35 miles has the O.Winston Link museum of steam train era memorabilia. Virginia Transportation Museum in Roanoke has much to see with it's extensive collection of steam era. engines and equipment.

Ski: Skiiing at Massanutten, Bryce, Wintergreen and The Homestead about an hour away.

Golf: Vista Links in Buena Vista is a new and popular public golf facility only about 15 minutes. The world famous Homestead courses are only an hour away.

The Caboose was amazing! Tom’s attention to detail is incredible; train DVDs, books, photos, etc. It is located very close to all of the major attractions in Natural Bridge. My husband loved the fire pit on the patio. My 3-year old son cried when we left, and has asked to go back every day since we left. We will hopefully be going back soon.

Perfect Fall Adventure

We loved our stay in Virginia and at the Caboose. The weather was perfect and enjoyed visiting attractions and just admiring the lovely Fall leaves as we walked and drove around the area.

Our favorite part was sitting around the Hobo Pit each evening. We loved just talking and sharing experiences. We also grilled each night for dinner and found the patio a very inviting location.

We never did get the hang of the satellite TV, but it was fine since we had more fun being outside around the Pit.

It was such a unique setting and we loved our time at the Caboose. Thank you for providing this experience.

My family and I loved staying in your caboose. When we first got there I said "This is pretty neat". My 5-year old son corrected me with "No Mom. This is TOTALLY AWESOME!!". He was right. My 5 and 3 year old sons did not want to leave. They just wanted to stay at the caboose and play all day! We had to drag them away to the safari park. They still ask us when we're going back to the caboose. Thanks!

I loved your cabose. It was everything I wanted. Me and my family loved out stay so much. I would love to come back. It was very tiny space but it was a very nice family experiance. I would do it agian in a heart beat. Thank you so much for making my birthday everything I wanted and so much more. Hope to be back soon

A great getaway for couples who just need a break from life!! Beautifully decorated and an amazing use of the space available. Tom has done a great job on this baby. The Safari Park was great fun, especially the walk through part. Be sure to read the rules for thee park and don't feed the Bison or Zebras! Highly recommend this spot, and kids will love it. Can't wait to come back again.
