George, the area capital, has vast, modern shopping malls, beautiful fresh local produce to take home to cook, cinemas etc. Just out of the town are the world famous golf courses, including Fancourt. Knysna, the oyster capital of the region, offers a charming waterfront, olde worlde shopping and memorable dining experiences. It is the little Cape Town of the Garden Route. From here you can sail, fish or people watch on the seafront. If you have children, there are numerous Wildlife Animal Parks nearby, where you can experience close encounters, touching and feeding ostriches, elephants, even crocs, lion and cheetah cubs.   • The master bedroom is on the first floor, of three stories. It has a double door onto the decking. There is a walk through dressing room into the large, well-appointed, and potentially romantic bathroom! The Juliet Bedroom is so called because of the balcony we have had built on, which you can walk onto to view the Ocean to the rear of the house. The twin bedroom is opposite the Juliet bedroom across a bridge which spans the open living area below. The two upstairs bathrooms enjoy a wooded view to the Ocean, which sometimes can be heard in the distance at night. Bedroom 4 is on the ground floor, underneath the house. It has two twin beds, a wardrobe and an en-suite shower and toilet.

Notes: There is a lovely shaded, large decked area, with dining table and chairs for 8, near to the built-in BBQ/chimney. It is serviced by a hatch to the kitchen. The jacuzzi is on a adjoined but lower decked area. The tub sits 6 adults. There are also 4 sun loungers and 4 plastic chairs and a hammock. Should you be at all concerned by security aspects of South Africa, the Garden Route has by far the lowest crime rate in the country and the house is alarmed, top to bottom. There is no land line, but mobile phone reception is excellent. We recommend buying a local phone/ SIM card. The main living area in the house is open plan, and cool because of the majestic high ceiling. The property is visited by the birds from the nearby sanctuary, and by buck, tortoises and mongeese. Although we are in 3 acres of woodland, it is wild, uncultivated bush, fynbos, particular to the area. Please contact us about children.

Golf: The Garden Route, one of South Africa’s top attractions is a scenic coastal region along its southernmost coast. Renowned for its beaches, indigenous forests, nature reserves, lakes, mountain ranges, adventure opportunities, hiking trails, and world class golfing. It runs from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape all the way to Storms River in the Eastern Cape. Bakatad is situated fairly well right in the middle. This unique stretch of South Africa coastline benefits from a mild climate all year long, making it a golfer's paradise. It enjoys a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, and mild to chilly winters. It is one of the richest rainfall areas in South Africa. Most of the rains occurs in the winter months, brought on by the humid sea-winds from the Indian ocean. The Garden Route's temperate weather falls between two climatic regions of summer and winter rainfall so it rains mostly at night which keeps the area perennially green. Fancourt Country Club Estate ,in George, is ranked in the Top 10 of all South Africa's Golf Courses. The Pinnacle Point Golf Course, perched on the cliff tops above Mossel Bay, was selected as one of the World's Top 10 Best New Courses for 2006. But with so many courses, 12 in the immediate area, all within easy driving distance of the house, you are spoiled for choice.

My sister and I, with our family, spent 10 days, over and including Christmas Day, in this fantastic log home. It was one of the best Christmases we've had! There is so much to do in the area for all the family. The boys played golf most mornings which they thoroughly enjoyed because the courses (a different one each time) were brilliant.
We took the children to a nearby elephant conservation park - we were so excited because we were allowed to pet the baby elephants! One day trip we drove into the Little Karroo where there is another conservation park for wild animals of all sorts, it was fascinating and we learnt a lot.
The house was very clean and tidy. We couldn't get the hot tub to work properly but other than that the facilities were perfect. We contacted the owner about the hot tub but as it was Christmas nothing could be done, they were very apologetic. However, we spent most of the time at the various wonderful beaches nearby anyway.
There are loads of really good restaurants. The food is always fresh, well cooked, well presented and loads of it!
I would certainly recommend this holiday to anyone, except perhaps families with very small children - there are lots of stairs!
