Head of St. Margaret's Bay is a typical Nova Scotia coastal community of shingled homes hugging the shoreline, with rugged coves and sandy beaches all the way from the Halifax metropolis to the French Acadian region & the Yarmouth ferry to Bar Harbor, Maine. Marine-oriented activities abound, as well as opportunities to watch loons, ospreys, eagles, & a family of pheasants each fall. History of Mason's Point: This property was owned by the first Mason family of the area & an ideal site was chosen on higher ground sloping gently down to the furthest point of land jutting into the ocean. They were Baptists and established the old Baptist Cemetery on Mason's Point Road, up from the Baptist Church. Much later it was part of a 100-acre estate assembled by the Keddy family, who had the oceanfront studio made for their artist daughter. The property was later acquired by the Jesuit Order who used it for their frequent Retreats and had many cabins in the woods. They used the studio as a boathouse, where the wooden pegs to hang their robes before swimming are still visible. Sometimes a Jesuit retiree will return to reminisce about those happy summers before the Order diminished & had to sell, fully expecting to see the old house torn down rather than lovingly restored, albeit with discreetly modern conveniences.

Visitors: Expect an occasional visit from deer, especially when the apples are dropping from the trees. A family of pheasants makes its annual appearance in the fall. Dolphins have been seen disporting themselves in the Bay, but you must go further afield for whale-watching. You will hear the sharp bark of sea otters from the rocks where Mom is protecting her babies. And you will see the eagle soar and the osprey swoop for fish in the Bay.

Peacful, Beautiful Oceanfront Setting

When we first arrived Fay and Robin greeted us nearby the home and had us follow them to their place. They were both very gracious and friendly. We were surprised and pleased with all of the amenities that our place on the ocean had. There is cable television and internet access among other things.

Though not far from restaurants and shops, the place gave the feeling of seclusion. It was clean and had every convenience that we felt were needed. The fireplace warmed us on any chilly days and nights although we could just have well have turned on the oil furnace.

We chose to dine out for lunches and prepare our own dinners though it wasn't necessary. There are plenty of good restaurants nearby. The owners provided a list of favored dining spots.

Nova Scotia is such a lovely area. The people whom we met were so very affable and pleasant. Our favorite places to visit were Mahone Bay an artsy town where we strolled about during the annual scarecrow festival, and Lunenberg, where we ate a most unusual and tasty lunch at Magnolia's. Our final lunch out was at the Bluenose at Peggy's Cove which had just recently changed hands. It was formerly Candlerigg's, I believe. There I had the most delicious steamed mussels that I've ever tasted and my wife had a fresh and delicious lobster roll served on a baguette.

My advice would be to stay off the highways. You will be treated to the loveliest views of the Atlantic on the coastal roads and gorgeous pastoral scenes inland.

Again, the people at these places were so amiable. We cannot wait to get back to the area and our new vacation home! Thank you, Fay and Robin.
