Lying in the beautiful countryside between Cortona and the Umbrian border, this self-catering property is a traditional Tuscan stone farmhouse which has been restored to the highest standards. It is set in a secluded south-west-facing position on a hillside with stunning views over a valley. A large terrace, with two pergolas and teak garden furniture, provides ample room for outdoor eating. Steps on the terrace lead up to a loggia, the perfect place from which to watch the setting sun. Below the terrace, there is a 10 x 5 metre swimming-pool which also enjoys the stunning view. To one side of the house there is a small gorge with stream; on others, there are fields with olive trees and wild flowers. The whole house is very well furnished and equipped. All its bedrooms and the first-floor sitting-room have views over the valley to the hills beyond. The sitting-room also has French windows which open on to the loggia.

The house is situated just outside an attractive hamlet in a hilly, wooded area of great beauty. There are wonderful walks in the immediate area and a rich variety of wildlife, including wild boar, deer, pinemartins and birds of prey. The road to Cortona winds up and over a range of hills and affords wonderful views of Lake Trasimeno. Cortona is a gem of a medieval Tuscan hill town with interesting Etruscan remains and has many good restaurants. In the other direction, the road follows the valley into Umbria and to the small town of Trestina where there are supermarkets and several other shops, as well as restaurants. There is also a supermarket in Morra, a few minutes away. This house is an excellent base from which to explore both Tuscany and Umbria with many interesting towns, such as Montepulciano, Siena, Perugia, Citta di Castello, Sansepolcro, Gubbio, Arezzo, Castiglion Fiorentino within easy reach. From Castiglion Fiorentino or Camucia, trains can be taken to Rome and Florence.

  • All three bathrooms have modern white loos, basins etc with chrome taps and other accessories. The water pressure is such that all the showers give a powerful spray. The tiles used are plain white and white towels and bathmats are provided. The floors are tiled in the hand-made cotto tiles that are found throughout the house.

  • Bedroom 1 is the master bedroom situated on the first floor. It has a large double bed, two bedside tables with lamps, a large chest-of-drawers, a built-in wardrobe and two chairs. It has a large en-suite bathroom. Both bedroom and bathroom have lovely views. Bedroom 2 is on the ground floor and has a double bed, two bedside tables with lamps, a chest-of-drawers and a wardrobe. French windows open out on to the terrace. Its bathroom is next door. Bedroom 3 is an attic bedroom with double bed, two bedside tables with lamps, a chest-of-drawers and wooden hanging rails. It has wonderful views and a small en-suite bathroom. Bedroom 4 is on the ground floor and has French windows which open on to the terrace. Although its single bed has another which stacks beneath it, the room is small and is really only suitable for one person (or, at a pinch, two children). It shares a bathroom with bedroom 2. All the bedrooms have rugs, good quality pillows and fine quality white cotton bedlinen.

The pace of life changes... after the hustle and bustle you notice the gentle rhythms of each day, the distant activity among the other residents on the hillside, the sky, the birds, the olives and walnuts... It’s brilliant to be independent - do what you please, and really relax. Oh and the property's facilities are first class, very clean and well-maintained, everything you need to make your stay a memorable one. I have recommended it to many friends.

And Relax...

My wife, one-year old son and I were lucky enought to spend 10 days at Casa Corgnoleta in July 2008, along with 4 baby-sitters (parents). We arrived with the intention of indulging in huge amounts of sight-seeing, yet ended up unwinding.

The three of us stayed in the two downstairs bedrooms, which we found to be clean, cool and comfortable. The kitchen was well-equipped, containing all we needed to cater for all hands.

There was plenty of space for sun-lovers and ample shade for those who do not wish to burn. The pool provided a refreshing dip whenever needed.

Shops were a short drive away, where were able to buy fresh local produce. We also visited a number of small, welcoming restaurants within 10-15 minute's drive.

Overall, we loved the holiday and were sad to leave. We were also a little frustrated that the environment had been so relaxed that we hadn't visited the sights we'd planned to. Still, there's always next time...

Food for the soul

Casa Corgnoleta is like food for the soul - the tranquillity, quiet, and inspirational views from the wooded hill top is R & R at its best. And, being Italy, the local food for the body is excellent too. It’s the sort of location you imagine a novelist would come to write a book - a place for reflection and getting back in touch with what matters.
The house deserves to be featured on “Grand Designs”. The old farmhouse and outbuildings have been restored with real love, care, and attention to detail. The accommodation feels timeless, but the facilities are contemporary - you feel in touch with Tuscany past and present.
