Perfect Hideaway and Antiquing Haven
Review Submitted: September 17, 2009
Date of Stay: August 2009
I spent a week at this one-floor cottage in September 2009. It is indeed a charming and secluded home. It is very well organized and maintained and thoughtfully equipped with everything you will need for your stay. Linens and towels are provided and a washer/dryer with detergent, etc. Although the bedrooms are rather small, the large, high-ceilinged kitchen, dining area, and living room combo is a spacious open area. There are large windows throughout, and light suffuses every room. Furnishings are simple and adequate. There is no telephone at the house, and my cell phone functioned only marginally (T-Mobile).
The house is 3.5 miles from Chester, a traditional Vermont village, with several art galleries, a leather shop, two or three high-end souvenir shops, and a couple of restaurants. No McDonald's or Dunkin' Donuts or the like! There is a gas station with a convenience store where you can pick up Boston and NY papers, milk, etc. It's a wonderful location for antique mavens as there are MANY antique shops in and around Chester. Grocery shopping (Shaw's) is in Springfield, about a 20-minute drive. In the winter, Okemo, a top-rated ski resort (I have skied there many times), is in Ludlow, about 10 miles away. There is an information booth in Chester which has brochures, maps, and descriptions of local walks and hikes.
At the house, there is a concise list posted centrally that covers everything you generally would need to know about using the house. The owners are available by cell phone (from Chester if not from the house).
I highly recommend this reasonably-priced home for a small group that wants privacy and a place to relax or a ski house in the beautiful State of Vermont.
