We found true paradise at Kiddel Bay between Christmas and New Year's 2008-2009. My 16 year-young nephew, my husband and I came prepared to do some serious snorkeling, pressure-free relaxation, and enjoy a new adventure. Our expectations were all pleasing met and surpassed. Thank goodness for Marc's help in escorting us to the cottage the first night. Renting a vehicle is a necessity unless you are a long distance walker. Learning to drive on the left side of the road and avoid goats and baby deer was a fun. The mountainous terraine was all part of the unforgettable adventure. The cottage had EVERYTHING we could possibly need to live comfortably for a week, once we stocked up on consumable groceries. There was even an offer to have this taken care of before our arrival.
Tranquility surrounded us every morning when we took our coffee and cereal out on the deck overlooking OUR bay. Hummingbirds and other feathered friends sang to us as we planned the day's activities. Afternoons found us back on the deck with a frozen beveridge my husband would blend for us from the kitchen. In the evenings, we would step out to watch an occassional cruise ship sail by or look skyward at more stars and planets than we had ever seen before.
When we would go down to the bay for snorkeling, we might see 0 to 6 other humans around. If we needed some human stimulation, we'd go into town. We went to Skinny Legs twice for casual, reasonably priced lunch/dinners.
It was a special treat to take my nephew on vacation during his Christmas break. We look forward to going back again and living in what must be stepping stone to heaven. Mary, the caretaker, answered all our questions and introduced us to some of the native pleasures like the simple beauty of watching a hermit crab move along the walk-way. When I lost an earring, she spent an hour under the cottage looking for it. Word to the wise: don't go snorkeling with any jewelry you won't be sad if you never see again. The earring was never recovered but we left with a ton of wonderful memories that we will cherish the rest of our lives.
Words of wisdom: Keep as much food as you can in the refrigerator. Take more than one underwater camera. Freeze bottles of water and take them with you whenever you leave the cottage. Bring and use 30 spf or more sunscreen. Learn to love a brief shower in the interest of resource conservation. Forget about having cell phone coverage from Sprint or Verizon in that part of the island, which can be a true blessing. Enjoy reconnecting with each other, laughing together, planning together, working together and getting to know this fantastic location known as Kiddel Bay.
