Welcome to Mountain Laurel Cottage on Norwich Lake. Available May 15-Oct.15. You'll feel as though you've been transported back to a simpler time when you step from the huge screened porch into the open living area with fieldstone fireplace. Living area flows into the original 1947 retro kitchen complete with modern appliances. Two bedrooms with two twin beds that can be put together to make a king. The living area has a trundle bed couch which opens to a queen or separated for twins. The porch has 3 loungers and a daybed. One bath with large shower. The cottage is set up and back from the dirt road on over an acre of land with amazing sunset views over the Berkshire Mountains. The lake is behind the cottage, a quick drive or 10 minute walk to the lakefront and private dock with a canoe and paddle boat. You'll be inspired for many outdoor activities! Or relax on the porch with a good book or one of the many games or puzzles as there is no TV, just a radio/CD player.

Lake activities: Many hiking trails and amazing views. The lake is pristine and fairly quiet especially during the week, you may be one of just a few folks out on the water. Weekends get a bit busier but never crowded. Swimming, boating, fishing or just floating away the afternoon. Hampshire YMCA in Northampton operates Camp Norwich on the lake with week long day camp programs for kids. You relax while the kids splash the days away.

Close attractions.: The lake is only 20 minutes from Northampton, a thriving university town and cultural center offering theater, the arts, antiquing and the best dining found anywhere. Spa services are available at many local shops. It is only 35 minutes from Lee and Lenox, home of Tanglewood, great antiquing also and shopping outlet.

great retreat: Mountain Laurel is 20 minutes from Smith College and 40 minutes from Amherst College and UMASS Amherst. 45 minutes to Mount Holyoke and Hampshire Colleges making it a nice place for summer students. Or a quiet writers retreat.

Other Activities: live theater and dance, Tanglewood summer concert series, cinemas

Best. Fireplace. Ever.

This was a perfect fall foliage spot for a get-together with a great friend I hadn't seen in two years. The cabin itself is spacious and clean, with a great screened in porch that came in handy when it rained. The lake is just a short stroll away from the cabin and is picturesque, and the cabin is just a short 20 minute drive from Northampton (where Smith College is located), which is a really interesting, eclectic town with good restaurants and a couple great bars. But, without doubt, the true highlight of our stay was the incredible fireplace that Denise and Chad (who are gracious and friendly hosts) informed us was built by Amish tradesmen years ago. Although the cabin is only three-season, we kept a fire roaring for hours and the place stayed cozy (firewood is provided, which is a huge plus in my book). We spent hours sitting around the fire, catching up while drinking way too many beers. And regarding the deposit, we had no issues at all. There were three of us all told, plus a dog. We stayed for a weekend, and it rained all day Saturday, though we still went hiking, dog and all. We tried to keep the place tidy, cleaned it up for about 30-45 minutes before leaving, and received our entire deposit back. Thanks, Denise and Chad--we had a perfect weekend and will be back!

Great rental, excellent price

I was hesitant about renting this property because there was only one review that complained about the security deposit. I'm going to put that to rest right now. Once a year, me and 5-6 other college buddies get together and hang out for the weekend. We were there for 3 days, used the kitchen repeatedly and we only spent about 45 mins cleaning up before we left. Again, that's 6 guys cleaning! :)

We had no problem with the security deposit and received the whole thing back!

The house was very comfortable and very quiet. I would highly recommend this property for a quiet getaway. The lake is just a stone's throw away. We honestly didn't spend much time away from the cabin though.

OK if...

This property is accurately described in the listing. It is generally a nice cabin with a great fireplace. There is enough hot water & the kitchen is generally well equipped. Unfortunately, we had some issues. The beds are ancient and very uncomfortable - very soft and wrapped in plastic that makes noise whenever you shift. The owner requires you to bring your own sheets & towels; you may find this cumbersome. Also the owner requires that the cabin be returned "just as you found it". This includes cleaning the bathroom & kitchen, vacuuming the floors and putting each and every item back exactly where it was found. From their note, leaving last minute dishes in the drainer was unacceptable, moving a small mat wasn't OK, the couch pillows were not placed in the correct spots, and the items on the kitchen table had been shifted. If you want a quaint cabin near a nice lake and if you don't mind hauling in all your own linens, scrubbing and cleaning the place from top to bottom, and making a mental note where all the items are positioned, then this is the place for you. We left the place reasonably clean and orderly and were charged a cleaning fee. In hindsight, having to act as the landlord's cleaning service doesn't seem like much of a vacation and we won't be returning here anytime soon.
