Great home base for sight seeing!

Gayle and Mark Plainfield, IL
Review Submitted: August 10, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We loved this cottage. It was impeccably clean and well kept. The pictures in the advertisement are quite accurate to what we found when we got there. The owner was wonderful about answering quickly when we had questions. We used it as a home point for sightseeing in Springfield, which was only a 15 minute drive away. We stayed over the 4th of July for an 8 day stay. Because of the kitchen we only went out to eat once, because we chose to. I think we had s'mores just about every night! Make sure you do your grocery shopping before 9pm unless going shopping in Springfield. Petersburg is a small town and closes earlier than us suburbanites! The lake is catch and release, however, close by there is fishing too. We had a blast right on the lake because we caught alot of fish. The neighbors were real friendly and gave us some tips on where and when to fish too. One of the things we loved the most was the back porch. It rained all day the 4th and we sat on the porch at the table and talked and played and felt like we were outside, but without getting wet at all. The other mornings we drank our coffee out there while watching the birds. We especially enjoyed the cardinals and a hummingbird. In the evenings the kids played in the playroom and the adults had the livingroom, which was nice. The playstation is a playstation I and not a 2 though. One controller sticks, so next year we will bring one of our controllers too. Still, the kids enjoyed it immensely. There are alot of games available too. One caution would be to arrive during the daylight hours your first time coming because it can be hard to find in the dark. Remember, it is in the country and it is dark. (Great for stargazing which we did too.) Also, the sofa sleeper has a bar that is VERY uncomfy for an adult. A couple of smaller children could sleep between the bars quite comfortably though. We found the beds and futons were comfy and snoozable. We really appreciated the ability to use their computer even though out in the country they only have dial up. We were able to check email, get maps to places, and search websites for places we were interested in. They have TONS of literature available to peruse for sightseeing purposes too. There is a waterpark, outdoor theater and all of the wonderful Lincoln sights to go see in Springfield. We recommend that you go and build some memories like we did. You will be glad you did!

Poker Party!

Texas Holdem Boys Central IL
Review Submitted: February 24, 2009 Date of Stay: January 2009
Four buddies and I rented this cottage in late January for a "boys night out" poker party. It was PERFECT!! The cottage was fully equipped with dishes, pots, pans, silverware, utensils, towels, linens, coffee, toaster, etc. The beds were comfortable and the sheets were obviously freshly washed. Our only problem was the property is non-smoking, and since three of us smoked, we spent quite a bit of time outside around the firepit with a roaring fire (firewood was available on site for a nominal charge). The game room was the best! The poker soon gave way to electronic darts. And the game room was about 3 feet away from the back porch and convenient to the house or a great retreat for teens - or bored husbands! The house is near the quaint village of Petersburg, were we ate. Ted's bar and restaurant is the best! Great fish and cold beer. There is an IGA store in town to restock the bar. The only problem is it closes at 9pm so plan ahead if your game is going into the wee hours like ours did. While we were outside around the fire having a cigarette, the neighbor came out on his back porch and said "hi". We never once felt unsafe, or for that matter, unwelcome. The neighborhood seemed to us to be a typical river fishing weekend community of what appear to be summer cottages, but all had cars in front of them in January. The back porch is the best - sit on the comfortable patio furniture and relax overlooking the lake with a cold one. There were Canadian geese stopping by the night we were there. There is even a small portable bar on the back porch. When we left, we loaded the dishwasher and took our the trash, although I don't think that was a requirement. We plan to rent the cottage again in the summer when we can add a fish fry to our poker night. I would recommend this property without hesitation. It is an EXCELLENT country get away - lots of peace and quiet. Good neighbors. Garage to keep the car out of the weather with opener. Bicycles for exploring the area. Fire pit. Weber grill. Satellite television on a big screen (32"?) tv (not flat panel though). Digital safe in the kitchen for securing items, and a "hidden" cache behind the hinged picture in the front room, just like in the movies. Digital locks are a huge convenience so no keys to hassle with. And the price... PHENOMENAL!! An entire house, garage, rec room, porch, on the water for less than a cramped hotel room. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Country Living

CountryLiving Arizona
Review Submitted: February 21, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2008
Everything was great! The owners have an electronic lock on the home, which was very convenient for us, as we were coming in late on the evening of our arrival. The fire ring out back made for very enjoyable nights roasting marshmallows, watching the sun setting behind the trees, and the geese on the lake. Having the internet was a great plus, as we could make our plans for sightseeing the next day by googling a few places of interest the night before and I was able to check e-mail, which is important. The cottage is very cute, and had everything we needed for our stay. They also had tons of extra linens, towels, etc., which was a nice touch as well. Even the little things, like Kleenex, were there. Attention to detail was very evident throughout the home. I would definitely recommend this cottage for all ages. It is also pet friendly, which was great for us. It's so much nicer to be able to stay in a home rather than a hotel room when we travel with our small dogs. All in all it is a GREAT place and we'll be back soon!

A perfect fall weekend getaway!

Let's Go Chicago, IL
Review Submitted: February 17, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2008
Perfect! My husband and I rented the cottage for a three night stay over a weekend last November. The place was very well stocked, down to the coffee and condiments, and the back deck is the perfect place for reading the paper, overlooking the lake and having a cup of coffee. The property was the perfect quite getaway, and is far enough away from the city to be a great vacation spot, yet close enough to get food, see a movie, etc. Kirsten, the owner sent us additional information (brochures, travel magazines etc) about the area prior to our arrival, per our request, and also had a vast array of brochures and pamphlets in the cottage so we could decide what sites we wanted to take in while we were in town. The Lincoln sites are right near by, which we greatly enjoyed, and I'm surprised to say that my husband even challenged me to a game of foosball in the game room off the garage. It was just my husband and I traveling this time, although we plan to meet the kids and grandchildren at the cottage next spring. The grandkids will really enjoy the game room, especially Playstation 2. I would highly recommend this home to anyone who is looking for a nice, quiet, country place to spend a weekend :)

Wow

Review Submitted: February 15, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009
Was very surprised by the neighborhood as we arrived. The house was full of dead ladybugs and had a very stale smell. When we went to make the pull out bed the sheets smelled like they hadn't been washed in months. We had brought both our dogs along and one just couldn't seem to get acclimated to the place and was very nervous. We never saw the game room because we were unaware that it was in the garage. Now I realize that there might have been a small room in the garage with the fun toys, but still was not happy with the house itself. The neighborhood was very dark and run down. I was concerned for the safety of my family while staying here. We ended up leaving after one night and went home to live with no bathroom while our house was under construction. We also never received anything by mail before our stay like it was specified on the phone.
Owner's Response: Unfortunately on a very rare occurance, actually this is our first occurance, we have a guest who posts a seriously inaccurate portrayl of the cottage. To date, we have had over 100 bookings, and have never recieved a poor review.

At the time of booking the cottage, all of our guests receive an e-mail which contains confirmation of the reservation, my contact information, including my cell phone number for use in the event that our guests need anything during their stay (ie. directions, dinner suggestions, etc.) and invite our guests to call us at anytime with any questions or needs they may have, often our guests call for site seeing ideas, to get information on the best fishing locations, etc. Within this confirmation e-mail, we also attach written directions to the cottage from the guests' region of origin (ie. Chicago, St. Louis, etc) as well as the key combination for guests to use to enter the home upon their arrival. This guest did indeed receive the e-mail (with the key code), as she would not have been able to enter the home if she had not.

There are absolutely no safety concerns present at this cottage. The cottage is in a rural setting, which has never experienced any safety issues. It is a very quiet community. So quiet that it appears that our above noted guests from the city felt it was "too" quiet as she had noted in an earlier post-visit e-mail to me.

As noted on our listing, the cottage hosts a game room, complete with board games, Playstation 2, a foosball table, an electronic dart system, a vintage Coleco videogame, half bath and washer and dryer. This room is located as an addition to the garage, and our teenage guests love using it as an "escape". Unfortunately, the above noted guest did not enter the game room although it's location was noted in the listing and in the confirmation e-mail, as the keyless entry combination is the same for the main home and the game room. And quite frankly, the property isn't that large that an entire room could be overlooked :)

In closing, the dogs which accompanied the travelers this weekend were indeed "nervous" as evidenced by the damage left behind in the home.

It is unfortunate to have a poor review, although I trust the other reviews on the cottage will provide potential guests with an accurate portrayal of the fun, memorable times which await them at Chatauqua Escape :)
