Woodstock holiday apartment

You never know when you rent a place through the internet. You might just get a pig in a poke. I’ve done internet renting several times and put this place is on the top of the list. The pictures do not do it justice. When I came down to my final selection, it was between this place and a place in downtown Woodstock. I am so glad I made this choice – the other one could not have provided the peace and beauty of this one.

The apartment is much larger than I expected. There is a great big main room with a huge L-shaped couch, a big dining table (not shown at all in the pictures), a large TV with dish, great internet connection, and a well-equipped kitchen. I don’t know why I found the room-facing sink so pleasing, but I did. There are plenty of big closets and shelves in each room, including the bathroom. I thought we were going to be tripping on our luggage, but they packed away easily. The bathroom is big with nice tile and a large shower.

The large screened in porch is wonderful and yields to an incredible view of the Hudson Valley. You don’t have to be out of the porch to see the view. You can just sit there and take the whole thing in, including the mystifying puffs that look like smoke in the distance which Jerry explained were the formation of clouds that pop up. Very weird! Again, the pictures do not do it justice.

My only recommendation is that you have a GPS if you’re not familiar with the area. The roads are very scenic, but they are laid out like dropped spaghetti.

The owners were very hospitable, but they do not interfere. You have a great sense of privacy. Our 10-day stay in the apartment was incredible. I came to do genealogical research and fell in love with the area. I can’t imagine why my great-great-great-great grandpa ever left.

We want to highlight that this house is a basement/cellar conversion. While it is comfortable the house is very dark and needs electric light at all times of the day. The porch is also very dull. It has an overhanging extension (look at photos carefully) The owners deck covers and overhangs the porch, as a result it gets no overhead sunlight at any time of the day.The 'beautiful garden' is not accessible to renters and you can't sit in it. There is no outside space to sit on. The soundproofing is very poor in the house. We were aware of the owners movements and activities. (Not suitable for babies)

My husband, son (aged 27), and I stayed at this apartment for 2 weeks in June, 2009. Myra and Jerry were wonderful hosts. They were very helpful and available, without being intrusive. They have a beautiful home, and both the home and the guest apartment have gorgeous, expansive views of the Hudson River Valley. Our son was doing doctoral dissertation research at the FDR Library in Hyde Park, as well as at Columbia Univ. in NYC. My husband and I discovered TONS of interesting things to do - from Albany in the north to the Storm King Art Center in the south, as well as a myriad of activities on the east side of the river. This property provided very reasonable access to all of these sites, as well as providing an ideal platform for the 6 or 7 excellent hikes my husband and son did in the Catskills. We would recommend this property without reservation; it is a great value in an excellent location!
