Charlottetown - a rich heritage:
The City of Charlottetown is extremely proud of its very special place in history as the 'Birthplace of Confederation'. Charlottetown is where the first meeting of the 'Fathers of Confederation' was held. The City of Charlottetown, named in honour of Queen Charlotte of England, is 152 years old; it was incorporated as a city in 1855. The four large squares included in Samuel Holland’s original layout of Charlottetown still exist to this day. Our population is approx. 32,000.
Charlottetown has a rich heritage visible through the magnificent architecture throughout our downtown. The City overlooks an excellent natural harbour formed by the junction of three major rivers. Charlottetown has developed into a bustling commercial, government, university, and cultural centre.
Charlottetown is firmly established as a popular tourist destination and is also home to the world renowned musical 'Anne of Green Gables'. Charlottetown is the entertainment capital of Prince Edward Island with theatres, festivals, art galleries, tours, concerts and historical activities.

Ask most Islanders and they will tell you that Charlottetown is unique. What makes it so special, you might wonder. Small and compact, with a skyline that doesn’t even top the local church spire, it nestles along the scenic harbour front like some city from the past. The first time people see it, they often want to giggle. City, they think- it hardly qualifies as a town! Therein, of course, lies its charm, its uniqueness, its indefinable quality that lures people back time and time again.
