Famous for the healing power of its spring water, its exquisite tropical gardens and gentle breezes from the Arabian Sea, Assagao remains relatively untouched by the growing tourism, despite being only 5 km from the famous Anjuna & Vagator Beaches. Mapusa, the market town, is 2 km away and, although hugely popular, has held onto its gloriously laid back Portuguese “sossegado” atmosphere.
The valley, populated by a Hindu-Catholic mix, is well known for its age-old, white-washed church, The Church of St Cajetan , considered as one of the ten best churches in Goa. Quaint village mansions dot the village and a time-worn landmark known as “Cator”.
