Pilar Casita is located in the canyon of the Rio Grande at the base of Picuris Mountains. This rural village is 20 minutes south of Taos and an hour’s drive from Santa Fe. We are an hour’s drive from 4 popular New Mexican ski areas. Pilar is also a destination site for birders, rock climbers, kayakers, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Archaeologists and geologists regularly visit the area to explore cultural sites and rock formations. Artists set up their easels along the riverbanks trying to capture the rich colors and dramatic landscapes of Pilar. Our casita is a small adobe house with a screened veranda overlooking the river. The casita features an open living/dining area, modern kitchen, 1½ bathrooms, a gear/utility room with washer and dryer, and two comfortable bedrooms. Brick floors, kiva fireplace, hand-crafted furniture, and artistic touches give our casita a cozy, New Mexican appeal. We are adjacent to the Rio Grande Orilla Verde Recreation Area.

Pilar is a quiet New Mexican village located on NM route 68 between Espanola and Taos. It lies adjacent to the Rio Grande river at the gateway to the magnificent Orilla Verde Recreational Area. River sports, biking, hiking, and bird watching are a few of the summer activities people enjoy in this area. Winter skiing is nearby in Taos, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and Sipapu. In addition to outdoor fun, the nearby town of Taos boasts numerous fine dining restaurants, art galleries, museums, and southwestern cultural points of interest. Taos hosts numerous festivals throughout the year including the Solarfest, the Fall Balloon Rally, and two art festivals, spring and fall.

Notes: We are adjacent to the Rio Grande Orilla Verde Recreation Area and enthusiastically offer a morning bird walk for our guests on weekends. Bring binoculars! The TV currently does not have antenna or satellite service. But, we have a nice collection of DVDs and VCR tapes for your entertainment.

Spring/Summer Conditions: Spring /Summer in Pilar can be the best time to visit. The spring snow runoff is very good this year. There is daily river rafting on two nearby river runs with class 1 to 4 rapids. Pilar is the site of the 'Race Course River Run' which runs along highway 68. Later in the summer, the Rio Grande and nearby mountain creeks offer some of the best fly fishing in the state. There are numerous hiking and mountain bike trails in the Taos/Pilar area that allow you to experience high altitude desert to mountain alpine environments.

Location Details: The casita is located at the end of a private cul-de-sac about 600 feet from the river. It is bordered by BLM land on two sides and is surrounded by mixed conifer trees that offer peace and privacy. This is a rental by owner. We live next door, 200 feet away, and we are happy to assist visitors with any details regarding their trip to the Taos area.

Spent a week here in early August. Beautiful setting, quiet and secluded. Perfect location -- close enough to town, but not too close. Comfortable bedding and furniture, nicely equipped. Gracious hosts. We saw a black bear crossing the main road below the casita on the day we left. We will definitely stay here again!

Great place, can't wait to come back.

The casita is lovely with great architectural details. The surrounding area feels secluded but you can be on the main highway in minutes. You can hike right behind the house. We loved watching all sorts of birds, rabbits, etc. The night sky can't be more beautiful here and Bruce provides a telescope. Very clean, comfortable and spacious for the three of us.The owners could not have been more gracious and welcoming. It is an awesome place and we really enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful retreat with gracious hosts

I would recommend this beautiful house for a quiet vacation retreat with outstanding views and gracious hosts nearby. I hope to return to rent the house again soon. Taos is a gorgeous 15 minute drive away.
