When my son and I arrived, we found that the property next door was under construction. While we had been given what would normally be considered one of the better rooms, with the construction going on, our view was of the workers on the roof next door - and they had a perfect view of us. The noise during construction hours and the rocky beach were also issues, and I nearly made plans elsewhere. Fortunately, we were able to switch to a lower floor away from the construction, which eliminated the workers' view and reduced the noise. A rockless beach was a short walk away. We were the only paying guests and the owners' and their guests quickly absorbed me and my 5 year old son into their fun. This really made the trip for us. My son played in the pool, which has a large 2 ft. depth area, nearly all day and enjoyed searching the tide pools among the rocks for fishes and shells. The family style arrangement of a shared kitchen was not only convenient and cost-saving, but allowed for a communal feeling with conversations and shared drinks and meals.
Service was a little sketchy, in that we were only given one bath towel initially; when they took the beach towels for washing, they didn't replace them; and the hand towel was replaced with a full size bath towel. But overall, the room was kept clean. The accommodations themselves were comfortable. Nice without being too elegant for a beach stay. Landscaping was being improved during our stay and it is clear that the owners continue to take an interest in improving things.
There's not much to go and do in Troncones, of course, which is the point of going there. But the others did take a steep hike to a nearby cave. My son and I didn't seem to have any trouble finding enough to keep us busy, even without TV or computer games. We swam in the pool and ocean, searched the tide pools, tried to fly a kite (there wasn't enough wind that day), and enjoyed the local restaurants. I can recommend Dona Nica which is a very simple restaurant near the Quinta d'Liz side of town. Their blue corn tortilla sopecitos filled with shrimp were a big hit with my son and I enjoyed their seafood soup (just plan to work for it, peeling and shelling). I found the resort restaurants of Mi Casa Su Casa, Majahua, and Tronco Bay fairly ordinary and overpriced.
I think the place could use a spot for drying wet things - t-shirts, swim wear, etc. - either shared or in ea. room. Also, kitchen scissors would be a helpful item to have.
