Touristic Villages:
Maison de Camille is centrally located to the top village destinations of this famous region in France: Sarlat (location of many period films and rich in Renaissance and medieval architecture), Rocamadour (famous pilgrimage site and village clinging to the cliffside), Beynac, Domme (the 'acropolis' of the Dordogne), La Roque Gageac (official most beautiful village in France), Castelnaud, Martel, Carennac, Gourdon, Gluges, Turenne, Curemonte, Monpazier, Montignac (home of the famous Lascaux Caves), St. Genies, and yet is also accessible to Brive (1/2 hour) and Cahors (1/2 hour) and the Lot Valley (St. Cirq la Popie - runner up for official most beautiful village in France). Slightly further afield one can visit Brantome, Bourdeilles, Bergerac. Despite the wealth of local sites, the house is located off the major tourist roads, assuring peace and tranquility.
Walks/Cycling:
Within the house are guidebooks indicating mapped walk routes in the area, some of which overlook Chateau Belcastel and the limestone cliffs of Lacave, as well as the loop of the Dordogne that curves around Chateau de la Treyne. There are at least 4 chateaux within about a 3 mile radius of the house, as the crow flies. It is also possible to take a stroll down the hill toward the river to St. Sozy where there is an artisan boulanger, and swimming and canoeing.
For those inclined to cycle, this region is a very popular cycle-tour destination and one can easily customize an itinerary each day with the maps available in the house. The roads around the house are relatively safer than the main roads, but all offer plentiful curves, sloping hills (and the occasional steep climb) and gorgeous scenery, and ample villages along the way to stop and have a rest. You will likely come across many other cyclists: a great opportunity to make new acquaintances and share experiences.
Golf and Special Events:
Golf is available at Souillac Country Club; at Montal; and in Vitrac.
A Jazz Festival (Sim Copains) is held over several days each July in Souillac, throughout the town (for free) as well as on main stage (ticket only) set up in the square before the Abbey. It features international artists (such as Archie Shepp in 2006) and packs a nice crowd.
Sarlat is home to an international film festival in November. Numerous theater and musical concerts happen throughout the year, and of course Sarlat is famous for its Saturday market.
Rocamadour has an annual festival just before Bastille Day in July (complete with fireworks over the chateau and sanctuaries), as well as in a goat cheese festival and annual hot air balloon festival.
In short, there are ample activities and options throughout the season, including a number of antique fairs.
Other Activities:
Abundant historic villages and prehistoric sites, farmers markets, wine.
