Lattice House takes advantage of the spectacular south Pacific coast views of Ballena (the Whale’s Tail), the Osa Peninsula, surrounding mountains and jungle for a truly tropical indoor/outdoor experience. Set in a 60 acre private nature reserve, 3 minutes above beautiful Playa Hermosa, tropical modern Lattice House enjoys ocean views from every room. The house was designed by Costa Rican architect Alvaro Rojas with design features added by Balinese architect Ketut Arthana. Custom designed finishes and furnishings--stone floors,windows and doors, lattice work, cabinets, furniture and accessories--were imported from Bali. The house was featured in the Feb. 2008 edition of the architectural and design magazine Su Casa and is included in the recently published 1000 X Architecture of the Americas. You will find no more convenient and beautiful beautiful setting from which to enjoy the beaches and jungle of Costa Rica.

Lattice House is conveniently located half-way between Dominical and Uvita, right off the beautiful coast highway. The half mile private drive up, lined with huge royal palms, winds through acres of private park-like spaces, with many more acres of jungle beyond. It's about 3 minutes down to the palm-lined beach--the best swimming beach in the area. It is frequently entirely deserted. You will find no other house and setting like it anywhere.

Notes: We imported three containers from Bali. Except for the structure itself, virtually everything came from Bali, much of it custom designed for Lattice House. This includes all doors and windows, all floors (slate and marble), decks ('ironwood'), pool tile (including volcanic black rock), and kitchen tile, cooper tub and vanity basins, decorative items, and all furniture--couches, tables, lamps, beds, cupboards, etc. We have exceptional managers who are happy to provide concierge assistance to guarantee a fabulous stay in Lattice House and the Costa Ballena area.

The reserve: The property comprises about 60 acres with only two houses, neither of which can be seen from the other. This area is entirely private. The road or driveway is an easy walk down (...and good exercise, up) to the coast road--cross it and you're on Playa Hermosa. The royal palm lined road passes through acres of park-like spaces (with scampering animals). Beyond the park you can walk into a very different world: tropical rain forest, virtually untouched, with only a few rough trails among huge primary and old secondary forest.

Playa Hermosa: This beach truly is 'beautiful beach'--palm lined, backed by rainforest covered mountains. When huge flocks of pelicans glide down the beach, you'll feel like you are in Jurassic Park. Most locals will tell you that this is the best swimming beach-- from Dominical to the 'whale's tail'. While the beach at Dominical, a few miles north, is the prime beach for surfers--known world-wide, it can be rough. Believe it or not, Playa Hermosa is almost always virtually deserted--you might see a few souls in the distance. Even on Costa Rican holidays you'll not feel like you are in a mob. And the water....! South Pacific blue, always the perfect temperature, Californians, leave your wetsuits at home.

so fantastic it made me cry!

This is going to take awhile.....I have so much to say about this stunning property. Following the homeowners very specific directions, you come upon the driveway into the property and it looks hidden and non descript. You turn off the coastal road and enter the property through a simple gate.......then you're eyes start to buldge because you can't believe this is where you have come to stay. A beautiful upward curving manicured tropical drive is lined with palm trees. This goes on for a good half of a mile as you ascend the reserve-like (I think it is a reserve - 50 acers) property. Then you see the house. Wow. I said to myself, "All my hard work in finding the perfect house for the perfect family vacation (my parents included) and I DID IT!" The house is soooo perfect. The photos say it all. It should be in architectural digest (remember David Bowie's house in Bali - this is as close as you'll come to it without traveling over the pacific). The views are stunning and dramatic. This is a great location for a photo shoot. I am an architectural designer and this was nirvana! I took soooo many pictures and hope to put them up on this site if there is a way to share them. Stop your search, I have done it for you (40 hours of house hunting - no kidding!) This is the place for you! The house itself is peaceful and secluded. Several mornings I woke up early and hiked up behind the house into the ancient forest to discover tree frogs, monkeys and toucans The dining is great in the dominical area and grocery shopping is 10 mins down the road. The caretakers are very enthusiastic and a wealth of information. Dominical is the place to go because it is still the unspoiled true Costa Rica. This may be over the top as far as a review but when you have a vacation this great after putting in so much time and energy you feel like you've won the Oscar for travel planning.

The small print: I am in no way related to or knew the homeowners when I booked this house. I just loved it in the photos and made the contact!

AMAZING

We stayed at the Lattice House in April 2009 with a group of 4 couples.

The place is SIMPLY AMAZING…we were all blown away from the minute we pulled in the driveway and looked through the glass doors to the view of the pool and the ocean. The house is incredible. We were sad to leave and can’t wait to return.

I grew up in Costa Rica so my expectations were very high before arriving - and my expectations were exceeded in every way.
1) Absolutely spectacular location. The view is simply second to none.
2) The house is quiet and relatively isolated, but within easy access of great beaches and good restaurants
3) The house and amenities are top notch
4) Great pool, great BBQ, fabulous balconies. Well designed and comfortable
5) There is enough to do in the area to keep you busy, or you can do nothing if you please. Perfect.
I can't recommend the house enough and I'm likely to return. Getting there is easy - quick flight from San Jose to Palmar Sur and rental cars are easily accessible.
Bottom line: Fabulous

This place is just simply magical. The house itself is a beautiful wonder with windows and doors open to the beautiful scenes outdoors. It is very well equipped and furnished very comfortably inside and out.
The real appeal however is its exquisite location with howler monkeys every morning, butterflies, hummingbirds, toucans everywhere and just a drop dead gorgeous view of the beach and ocean. The arrangements were easy to make and the stay was just magnificent. I only wish I could have stayed longer...

This is the place

We had a fabulous time at the Lattice House and highly recommend it to others who want to take a dream vacation to Costa Rica. It is an elegant place with a beautiful view in a great location surrounded by birds and howler monkeys. Day trips are easily accessible whether you want to go to the Oso Peninsula and Isla del Cano, snorkel or surf in the ocean or take a zip line tour in the jungle.

But beware, it is easy to decide not to go anyplace and just relax in this retreat in the midst of its own wildlife preserve. On the property there are lovely places to hike, you can swim in the pool, or relax on one of the decks with your camera in one hand, your binoculars hanging around your neck and a cup of coffee or glass of wine on the table beside you. Close by there are excellent places if you want to eat out and well stocked markets if you want to fix a nice meal on the veranda by the pool. Ours was a three generation family trip with teenagers, young adults as well as older adults – and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. So grab your bathing suit, binoculars, a good camera (you won’t believe what wonderful photos you can take there) and you’re ready to go.
