Fort Greene is an historic neighborhood with brick townhouses and classic Brooklyn brownstones built in the mid-late 1800s. There are also wooden houses with wide porches and beautiful hand-carved finial details. The neighborhood is centered around Fort Greene park with its tennis courts, dog-walkers, joggers and kid's playground. Nearby is the historic Navy Yard, Williamsburg, Bed-Stuy and Greenpoint. Fort Greene has 3 major areas - Fulton/Lafayette streets where there are clothing stores, bistros, bars and the famous Raven Cake Man's red velvet cake. DeKalb avenue is home to coffee shops, Madiba's South African restaurant and live-music venue, hat shops, pet shops and vegetarian haunts. Further over on Myrtle Ave., you will find every type of cuisine from Jamaican patties to Thai to Middle Eastern. Pratt school of design is located here and the area throbs with creativity. Down Myrtle Ave. are 2 excellent art stores.
