A unique house - classified as an historic monument! Under new ownership and newly renovated, the house is being rented out for the first time in late spring 2009 as a vacation home. A narrow lane runs under the house, as this is one of the original four gates to the old town of Gualdo Tadino, built in 1242. (The lane has minimal traffic.) The first floor above street level has a lounge with wood fireplace with comfortable seating, an eat-in kitchen and a bathroom. The floor above has 2 double bedrooms and a bath. Beautiful views of the mountains and town. After you explore Gualdo or other historic hilltop towns nearby (Gubbio and Assisi are both about half an hour away) or come back from adventures and activities in the National Park of Mount Cucco (15 minutes away), relax at Porta San Donato with a DVD, CD, or book from our library while planning out the next day's activities.

There's lots to enjoy in this beautiful old medieval town in NE Umbria! Stroll through the streets and alleys to see wonderful old architecture, museums, magnificent churches. Stop for a bite to eat or glass of wine at a bar or restaurant; browse in the shops - don't miss the metallic-colored pottery for which G.T. is famous, in the craft shops that still have muffle kilns, as well as the Modern Pottery Museum, or the unique handcrafted jewelry of Elisabetta Lupi. Visit the Emigration Museum, where you can find information about Italians who emigrated from various regions, and the Rocca Flea museum with the Permanent Pottery Fair and paintings by da Gualdo. Every 2nd Thurs. is the open market in the town center, offering local goods, antiques,etc. The town is also famous for its delicious mineral water; just turn on the tap at Porta San Donato for a taste! Gualdo T. is not overloaded with tourists, and the friendly locals will enthusiastically welcome you!

'Games Of The Gates' (Giochi De Le Porte).: If you choose to be here during the last weekend of September, you're in for a real treat! You'll be able to experience the biggest activity of the year here, the exciting 'Games of the Gates'. Archery, slingshot, catapult competitions, bareback and donkey cart races, flag throwing performances, parades, music, and pageantry in medieval costumes - a real spectacle! The competitors represent the original four gates of the town: Porta San Benedetto, Porta San Marino, Porta San Facondino, and our very own PORTA San Donato.

PARCO DEL MONTE CUCCO; BEACHES; OTHER ACTIVITIES.: Mt. Cucco (1566 m; 5138 ft.) is part of the ridge of the Appenines, between Umbria and Le Marche. Gualdo Tadino and Gubbio are the most important nearby towns to Mount Cucco Park. If you would like to see all that this wonderful park has to offer, visit their website. The nearest beaches are on the Adriatic, 60 miles east, and Lake Trasimeno, 40 miles west. The nearest golf course is the Golf Club Perugia, 36 mi. Perugia's website gives events, shopping tips, transport, and more for the whole region. It's not necessary to have a car in Gualdo T. to have a great time, since there is a train station and connections to other towns (Assisi, Perugia, Foligno, Spoleto, and more), as well as bus connections to the park and other places. However, if you are staying for a longer period of time and want greater freedom to see as much as possible, a car is advised. There's parking on the street right near the house.

NEARBY TOWNS.: Gualdo Tadino has easy access to many other wonderful Umbrian towns. Assisi (of St. Francis' fame) is only 20 mi. away. Beautiful ancient Gubbio, rich in monuments, lies 16 miles to the nw. In May check out its 'Racing Silk of the Crossbow' and the 'Ceri Race Festival', the 'biggest Christmas tree in the world', every year on Dec. 7, and in Nov. 'The National Exhibition Market', celebrating local truffles, exquisite foods, and local handicrafts (ceramics, wrought steel, embroidery, wood, leather, stucco…). Perugia, 29 miles southeast, the capital of the province, is a notable artistic center of Italy. Enjoy the art, music, architecture, shopping, University, and famous chocolate all year round! Enchanting Spoleto (famous for its 'Festival of the Two Worlds') is 37 mi. south. 23 mi. away is Foligno with many activities, such as the Tournament of the Quintana (Sep. 13-14). There are also MANY other lovely interesting towns all within reach for day trips - a new one each day!

Great apartment

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Porto San Donato. The apartment is well decorated and furnishings are comfortable. The town is intesting and is close to many must see sites in Italy. Our hosts have provided information and maps for the area sites and are very gracious. It was a lovely stay in an ancient city wall with all the comforts.

Lovely Place, Great character & ambiance!

It was our first visit to Italy, and we came for the "Games of the Gates" which was recommended by the owner of the house. We had a fabulous time! The shops are just up the street from the house. You can find fresh fruit & bread, window shop for clothes, or sit in one of the cafes and enjoy people watching. The locals were very helpful and pleasant as well. The house had all the modern amenities and well maintained. As it is in a hill town, and based on the side of a narrow street, it is NOT the best for the physically challenged. The beach (Adriatic sea) is only 40 kilometers away, and well worth going to. I would like to return!

Experience true Italian flavor!

This was an awesome experience. If you are looking for big city excitement, this is NOT the place. But if you want to experience true old-world Italian living, this is the place.
The house has been renovated with warmth and good taste, while sticking to the Italian flavor. Very comfortable.
Markets with fresh fruits and vegetables are within walking distance of a couple of blocks. Great little coffee shop one block past that. The people are helpful, and hospitable. There was music and dancing in the streets in the evenings a couple of nights. It was outstanding.
I would highly recommend this house.
Only one downside. There are 32 stairs up to the bedrooms. If you have trouble with stairs, or a lot of walking, this is not the house (or town) for you. You will probably need to rent a car if you want to do more sightseeing.

What a great place!

Staying in Porta San Donato was well worth the money, a real bargain for such a magnificent place to stay. I just love old houses but this is by far the oldest building I’ve ever slept in. Imagine being able to stay in the original gatehouse to a town built in 1242! In addition to loving the building itself, I was crazy about the inside. It was so comfortable and beautifully decorated. There wasn’t a thing that I wanted that the house didn’t provide. I was impressed with the care the owner has taken to welcome guests – from the guest basket to the tasteful décor and tons of amenities. While I loved the feel of being in such a historic building, I enjoyed all the comforts of a grand hotel. The town itself is also a very interesting place. I was glad that there was a nice computer store a block away from the house that had easy-access to internet service available. I also enjoyed wandering through the charming streets and stopping in the shops. I enjoyed exploring the other old hill towns in the area as well. For a fascinating place to stay, Porta San Donato is it!
