Old-world elegance, sumptuous decor and a location in the heart of Burgundy in the gem town of Beaune make this remarkable home the perfect choice for a truly French vacation. Its layout is typical of a wealthy merchant’s house, where the street level was traditionally reserved for work: storerooms, kitchens, larders, scullery, caves, workshops, and all the ‘offices’ associated with a busy household. Family life was lived in comparative peace and quiet upstairs – the stairs in this case being an imposing creation in marble and wrought iron worthy of a château. And at the top . . . you’ll step back in time a century or more into high-ceiling rooms with their original tiled or parquet floors, splendid oriental carpets, tall windows swathed in generous drapes, and authentic late Victorian antiques that recreate a setting the earlier owners would have found entirely comme il faut ('right and proper') in every detail.
