The Dordogne valley is rightly considered one of the most beautiful parts of France, its tapestry of rich farmland, vineyards and walnut groves threaded through by the winding silver river and framed by wooded hills and craggy headlands, many of them crowned with rugged medieval castles. These are a reminder of the centuries when its riches were fought over by both English and French. The resulting legacy of châteaux, fortified towns, hamlets and farmsteads make up a picture-book landscape that is always dressed in green, unaffected by the scorching heat of summer further south. With its mellowed stone walls and steep tiled roofs, Maison de la Rivière is a typical Périgord home, sited in wooded grounds of 2 acres immediately above the river.
