'Sculptural' and 'dramatic' are words that spring to mind when one tries to describe Can Maia. Set in a pastoral glade framed by the Pyrénées, it is a bold juxtaposition of contemporary design and the traditional character of an old family farmhouse. The centerpiece of the house is the new kitchen wing, a bright open-plan which demonstrates the owner’s creative flair with its imaginative use of hanging automotive lights, while the latest appliances and equipment are a cook’s delight. The exciting contrast between the kitchen wing and the original farmhouse is highlighted by a glass passageway (“the Looking Glass”) that connects the two sections and provides glimpses of the original exterior walls - made of unusual pointed stone blocks that emphasize the rustic character of the main house. The entire ground floor of the main house is a generous living room with high ceilings and a central fireplace. On the upper floor, the bedrooms are simple and share two bathrooms.
