Date of Stay: May 2007
When we reminisce about our stay at the Holloway’s Kalihiwai house, the first 2 things we all think of are: 1) the incredible view, and 2) the sound of ocean waves. 2007 was our 3rd trip to Kauai, and the house we stayed in the year before was booked. We were disappointed because that house had a fantastic view of the North Shore, including Bali Hai, and you could hear the ocean in the distance. I found what looked like the next best thing available, the Holloway house. How lucky we were. We arrived late, tired and apprehensive about an unfamiliar house at night. When we opened the back sliding glass door, we were transported to a Hawaii fantasy. The ocean and bay below were lit by the moon, clouds topped the mountains and the sound of ocean waves overwhelmed us. We knew we had made a superb choice.
Not only was the view more spectacular (all the way to Bali Hai) than the house from the year before, the loud sound of ocean waves was a wonderful new sensation for us. We rarely watched TV or even listened to music, content to enjoy the view and listen to the ocean. We never ate a dinner out because we couldn’t see the sense in driving somewhere and waiting for a table when we knew the view could not be better.
We’ve researched and visited every area of the North Shore, and the Kiluaea/Kalihiwai area will always be our first choice. The house had a wonderful Hawaiiana ambience, hardwoods throughout, and the tasteful furnishings nice and fairly new. Our kids loved the spacious backyard. The kitchen is large and well equipped.
If you’ve been to Kauai, this will mean a lot: NO GECKOS. We didn’t see a single gecko inside. We also saw no ants.
My wife and I do believe that this house will be most appreciated by visitors who are returning to Kauai, and ideally, have become North Shore loyalists like us. If you love Kauai, especially the North Shore, then you will absolutely love this house. We have a hard time considering vacationing anywhere but Kauai, and now we know where we’re going to stay when we do go – this house.
