At the top of the mountain village of Penedo, Casa do Leao ('The Lion House') is set in its secluded garden, about 40 mins drive from Lisbon. This restored 18th century country house of great charm is an excellent base from which to explore the historical attractions of the Sintra area -- including palaces, castles, and monasteries. There are interesting walks right on the doorstep with opportunities nearby for sea-bathing, cycling, and golfing. This bright, cheerful house offers lots of space for up to seven guests. The three double bedrooms are comfortably furnished (one with a balcony) and a spacious landing has an extra bed adjacent to a bathroom. There are three full bathrooms and an exceptionally large entrance hall. Both the sitting and dining rooms have French windows leading on to patios. The comfortable furnishings complement the old-world charm. The appliances in the light & airy kitchen include a built-in cooker, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker & fridge/freezer.

Casa do Leao is set in the unspoilt greenery of Sintra National Park, a World Heritage Site offering a wealth of castles, monasteries & fascinating walks & cycle rides right on the doorstep - take some delicious local bread, cheese, sausage & wine for a picnic! The heavily indented coastline shelters many lovely beaches - for swimming, surfing & walking - all within easy reach of the house. The Sintra Music Festival is held each summer & there are art galleries & antique shops. As well as the colourful markets, each weekend a collection of stalls assembles by the Almocageme junction to sell fruit, vegetables, flowers, bread & cakes, etc. - great fun!

  • Bedroom 1: A large comfortable room with French windows & a balcony on one side & a window on the other. There is direct access to the garden. The furniture is in natural pine as is the ceiling & there are cheerful Iranian rugs on the floor. The nearest bathroom is either across the landing or just at the bottom of the stairs. Bedroom 2: A pretty room with plenty of space. The 2 single beds can be pushed together to form a double bed. One window overlooks the back garden & the other looks over the front garden down to the sea. There is a large built-in wardrobe. The bathroom is adjacent & can be made self-contained by closing the door at the end of a short corridor. Bedroom 3: A very cozy, spacious room downstairs, off the main entrance hall with a garden view, fireplace + satellite TV/DVD/Video/P'station +TV's in Sitting Rm &kitch). The twin beds can be pushed together or the room can be used as an additional sitting rm. Nearest bathrooms: at bottom of the stairs or by the kitchen.

The washer and dryer are in a separate laundry room. A weekly maid service is included in the rental. In the winter the house is kept cozy thanks to electric night-storage radiators, double glazing, a wood-stove & an open log fire. The walled garden is interestingly set out on several levels with a built-in grill and various patios with spectacular views. There is a small pool shaded by an olive tree with lovely views up the coast. Despite Penedo's rural location, Lisbon -- one of Europe's most exciting capitals -- is within easy reach by road or rail. The nearest beach is just an eight-minute drive away, while Sintra is about 20 minutes away. The quaint coastal resorts of Cascais and Estoril are an easy 30-minute journey by car. The nearest shop is a five-minute walk away and there are supermarkets within easy reach. The locality boasts a wide choice of restaurants, bars, and cafes serving fine wines and delicious regional specialties.

Absolutely a marvelous place. We will be returning in the future. One of the most beautiful places we've ever been to. The accommodations are 5 Star and the village is charming. This is a good location to get to either beaches or tourist (churches & castles) sites while still being out of the way. Loved it.

Das ist ein ganz tolles und einzigartiges Haus. Es ist so liebevoll eingerichtet, dass einem viele Details erst nach einigen Tagen auffallen. Wir hatten einen wunderschönen Aufenthalt und konnten richtig entspannen. Der Pool war für unsere Kids genau das richtige, da nicht allzu tief. Übrigens, es war alles supersauber. In jedem Fall empfehlenswert!
