Where do we start?? Absolutely brilliant! If you need to be "away from it all", and can drive a car up an extremely steep hill, look no further!
When we are away together, husband and I love being off the beaten track, in beautiful places. We've travelled far and wide, but Casa Silencio is heaven, even in late November..
Our wonderful host, Lydia, and her friend Marianne (I hope I've spelled her name correctly, I apologise if not..) greeted us warmly, gave us a thorough conducted tour, and advised us on hiking possibilities, which turned out to be invaluable-thank you so much!
Casa Silencio is gorgeous, all credit to Lydia and Hermann for creating a perfect paradise. Everything even the most discerning traveller could wish for, comfortable, a great base, and a place to "chill".
We happened upon La Palma, as we can now get cheap flights to Santa Cruz direct from Manchester, and we love hiking, exploring etc, and get fed up of the British weather...
First day, visibility excellent, so we visited Roque da Las Muchachos, over 2400m up-it's a MUST. Sun hot, shade cold, factor 50 necessary, views incredible! Thereafter, explored area around Barranco de las Augustias, again much walking to be done, very hot at a lower level! Walked again next day, by the coast, but then discovered a recently built mountain road at Tijarafe, where we climbed down (and then UP!!) to wander around a small "fishing village" right by the sea. La Palma can be a little frustrating-the sea views are amazing, but there are few places you can actually get to it, so this was a bonus! On an ominously cloudy day (and Husband had walked into a lamp post earlier on, and was mildy concussed, I'm sure!) we happened upon Puerto de Naos, a small "beach resort", black sand, of course, where we spent a good couple of hours taking in the ambience-this is about as touristy as it gets, I'm sure-it was pretty tranquil-then back up the road to Tazacorte, a pleasant village, with another beach, and a laid-back feel. The "volcanoes" had to be done, even though the visibility wasn't terribly good on the last day, so I have to admit to making my excuses so I could swelter, chill out, paddle in the sea, and read on a beach, (recommended+++!) while my husband, who can't sit still for very long, delighted in his high level tour. He was in his element, and I was in mine! We didn't go out for a single meal, choosing instead to cook for ourselves, with a beer or two, each evening. THANK YOU LYDIA X
