San Quirico di Moriano holiday cottage

The House and Surroundings: It is a simple house, but contains everything you need for a holiday, and is beautifully situated. The owners spend several months a year there, so the house is always kept well-maintained. There are lovely walks straight from the house, while more adventurous walkers will want to venture into the Apuan Alps, where there are marked paths through the spectacular scenery. The unique combination of rural peace with easy access to the walled city of Lucca is what makes this an especially good choice for a holiday. You can venture South or East to the many wonderful cities of the region, or North into the mountains, West to the seaside resorts of Forte dei Marmi or Viareggio and the sculptor's headquarters of Pietrasanta - or just sit under the pergola and eat, drink and read at the marble table overlooking the valley.

Eating and drinking: We are fortunate to have an excellent shop about 1 km down the road, where fresh bread is baked daily and a wide range of local foods is available. About ten minutes walk up the road is the Villa Volpi, a beautiful and prestigious restaurant and hotel. The local villages of S Quirico di Moriano and S Cassiano di Moriano also have simpler, but good restaurants, and of course Lucca itself boast many possibilities in this area, of which our favourites are da Gigi, in the Piazza del Carmine, and da Leo, in via Tegrini. Sesto di Moriano boasts a very famous restaurant - La Mora - as well as the excellent Antica Locanda di Sesto. On the other side of the river Serchio, 'A Palazzo is beatifully situated high on a hillside overlooking the Serchio valley, and is excellent value, especially if you choose its house antipasto.

Music and entertainments: Lucca has a long musical tradition. Boccherini and Catalani were born there, and so were several generations of Puccini (many organists of the cathedral) down to the famous Giacomo. Before you go there, check what is on at the opera Giglio (but I would advise against the many ad hoc concerts of Puccini arias which are designed to trap tourists). There is a local English-language newspaper, Grapevine, which you can buy at most newsagents, and this is a good guide to what is on in the area, musically and otherwise. In the summer, many villages have a sagra, which is a festival where food is eaten at long tables in the open air, with ballroom dancing (ballo liscio) afterward. Apart from being good fun, the food is always excellent and moderately priced.
