Exploring:
We are a German-Italian family living in Umbria, here in the middle of the Italian peninsula, where one can take extended walks through splendid forests over innumerable hills, and where one can still find rare wild herbs. The Apennine’s bizarre mountain chains and crags offer much-varied natural landscapes, broad valleys, numerous springs, hot springs, and lakes. Well-preserved walls, old towers, fortresses, settlements, cloisters, villages and townscapes rise from the rich oak forests and olive groves, having hardly changed since medieval times. They often give hikers the impression of a living, unforgotten epoch. The region is seeped in the culture and traditions of its vivid past and rich with Etruscan, Roman and Medieval art and architecture. The cities of Perugia, Gubbio, Assisi, Spello, Todi Orvieto, Spoleto and Norcia are not the only places worth being explored.
The Valley of the Nera, 'la Valnerina' and Cuisine:
This is one of Italy’s most significant regions for landscape and nature reserves. Sheep and horses still romp here. The mainly mountainous, somewhat secluded valley is located far from noise, hustle and bustle. This is a region which is blessed by many natural and cultural riches, and whose charms range from Europe’s largest waterfall, “Cascata delle Marmore“, to the springs in Nera, which can be explored in the Sibilline Mountains. Once, warriors, tradesmen, mercenary armies and holy men have all found their well-deserved rest here while passing through. Umbria is also renowned for its simple, delicious dishes and “home cooking”, which are often grilled or cooked over glowing coals, as they were in ancient times. Umbrian cuisine uses local products almost exclusively. Special delicacies include mild to robust wines, olive oil, products from lamb and wild boar, prosciutto, salamis, salsicce, freshwater fish, pecorino and the most refined specialty of them all, ‘il tartufo’ -truffles!
Casa del Postiglione - Assorted:
Our vacation house is fully detached and divided up into two or three floors, which follow the course of the hillside. It is separated into three different apartments, each of which has its own special charms (we live in one them ourselves). Both of the old stone pizza ovens are ready for use. The beautiful property is partially surrounded by oaks and extends over a number of levels. You can even pluck a few figs, cherries, grapes, berries and hazelnuts. One part of the enclosed garden has a swimming pool (3.75 x 7.25 m) and a sandbox, another a Ping-Pong table. You can shop in the “mini market/Bar” in the village. There are additional shops in Sellano and Cerreto, as well as a supermarket in Borgo-Cerreto (about 9 km). You can also visit a cozy pizzeria or restaurant in Borgo-Cerreto, should you want a change.
