Known as the un-Hamptons, Shelter Island is an 8,000-acre paradise located between the North and South Forks of Long Island. Accessible only by ferry, this island offers the best of all worlds, from the peace and quiet of its pristine natural surroundings to cultural attractions and night life. A three-minute ride on the South Ferry takes you to Sag Harbor and the Hamptons, with its restaurants, movie theaters, tony fashion stores and crashing waves. A 10-minute ride on the North Ferry takes you to the North Fork, known for its burgeoning wine country and quaint towns including Greenport with its restored 1920's Merry-Go-Round, boutiques, and Tall Ships. Stop by one of the many roadside stands for fresh local produce or venture into Alice's Fish Market where you can purchase that day's catch.

Nearby attractions: • Newly revamped Shell Beach —a popular attraction among islanders. • Private Silver Beach, just a two-minute walk away. • Sunset Beach and Hotel, famed for its hip scene (complete with celebrities and Hampton posers) courtesy of André Balazs, of Chateau Marmont and Standard Hotel fame. • Perlman Music Camp, where famed founder Isaac Perlman has been known to perform on a occasion at the free outdoor weekly concerts offered in July and August.

Other on-island activities & attractions: Mashomack Nature Preserve, a 2100-acre area which boasts 10 miles of coastline and hiking trails that offer scenic views of tidal creeks, fields, woodlands and wildlife galore, from the magnificent osprey to colorful turtles. Shelter Island is a great place for biking as well as kayaking. Rentals are available for both on the island. Shelter Island's top-notch restaurants, most notably Vine Street, serve local produce and fish.

Getting around: Car recommended (for visiting the island, shopping), but the island is bicycle-friendly. Bikes can be transported to the island on the Hampton Jitney bus service (several times a day; bicycle storage costs a fee) or on the Long Island Railroad line (terminus is in Greenport, right at the North Ferry; no fees for bicycle transport; train runs only twice daily). Both ferries have car and bicycle fees; walk-ons: $2.
