Photos and Description of this County Cork holiday house 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, sitting room with sleep sofa, study, sleeps 8

East House is located in the heart of the village of Castletownshend, yet it is very private. The gardens and many of the rooms face the rear with lovely views toward the sea. The very large living room (with fireplace), comfortably holds a large group, while the cozy den (with 2nd fireplace) and the sitting room (with TV & DVD) provide quiet spaces. Walk down the hill to Mary Ann's, a pub famous for its food and atmosphere. Shopping is 4 mi away in Skibbereen. Short drive to sandy beaches, golf, gardens. The village was home to authors Somerville & Ross, and East House was formerly a part of Tally Ho House where Edith Somerville spent her last years.

Further details for this holiday house rental in County Cork, Ireland

Great House for a Group - Or a Couple: At one time, East House was two separate houses, and it rambles. The study and the bedroom with queen size bed are in the 'old house', and a bit removed from the living room and other bedrooms. The living room will seat everyone, but if you need to get away, there are other places to be. The kitchen has lots of counter space and is large enough for a few cooks. If your group is small, individual radiators in each room and doors that close allow you to turn off the central heating in the rooms you are not using.

Artists and Art Lovers: Artists of all kinds are inspired by the beauty of the area. East House is a relaxing place for writers to work, visual artists to sketch or paint, and photographers will want to snap photos at every bend in the road. There are shelves of books in the house, some by local authors Somerville and Ross. Arts events nearby include a summer concert series at St. Barahane's Church right in the village, the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Bantry, Kinsale Arts Week, West Cork Literary Festival in Bantry, and Cape Clear International Storytelling Festival. Traditional music sessions take place at pubs in Skibbereen and Clonakilty.

Boating, Diving, Beaches, Golf: Whale watching tours leave from Reen Pier, directly across the harbor from Castletownshend. Sea angling, scuba diving, kayaking, and sailing are minutes away in Baltimore, Union Hall and Glandore. There is a small pebble beach in Castletownshend, and it is a very short drive to sand beaches at Sandy Cove and Tragumna. Larger sand beaches at RossCarbery and Inchydony are about 30-40 minutes away. The Skibbereen and West Carbery Golf Club is an 18 hole course. Other nearby golf courses are Bantry Bay Golf Club, Lisselan in Clonakilty, and courses in Kinsale, Bandon and Glengarriff. All welcome visitors. A tennis court and a playground are just around the corner from the house.

A Perfect Irish Vacation

Gail and Eric Philadelphia, PA, USA
Review Submitted: July 22, 2009 Date of Stay: November 2008
We give East House our highest recommendation. We stayed at East House for a week in early November 2007 and enjoyed comfortable fall weather, with gardens still in bloom. Upon our arrival, we had a warm welcome from a local woman who gave us a tour of the house and assured us she would be available if we needed anything.

This charming, well-maintained house easily accommodated our group of eight, which included our two elementary school age grandchildren. Because of its expansive structure, the house provided privacy to all. The spacious rooms were clean and bright, and the modern kitchen was very well equipped. We were fascinated with the history of the house, with the story of the Irish writers, Somerville and Ross, with the historic paintings, contemporary works, and shelves of books. And we enjoyed the excellent food and comradery at Mary Ann's Pub - with its small art gallery - a short walk down the street.

Castletownshend is an unspoiled Irish village, complete with a castle, and the villagers were friendly and welcoming. Walks in the village took us along meadows with horses and grazing cattle, along the harbor, and through the historic Churchyard. Our day trips took us to the Ring of Kerry, the Blarney Castle, Cobh, Lough Hine, the 150 B.C. Dromberg Stone Circle and to the southwestern tip of Ireland at Browhead. En route to Shannon Airport for our return home, we spent some time at the Cliffs of Mohr and the Burren. A vacation to remember and a place to return to.
