Enjoy elegance and beauty of a country home:
Canning House is surrounded by 3 acres of lawn and gardens. A west-facing terrace is ideal for afternoon reading and drinks watching spectacular sunsets. The gazebo overlooks both the cattle grazing on the next farm and the peaceful courtyard garden. The 185 foot arc garden includes perennials and flowering shrubs providing enjoyment from June through October.
Canning House is well-suited for a quiet holiday away from it all or entertaining family and friends. A weekend visit can readily combine antique shopping Port Hope with cross country skiing, in the Northumberland Forest and a leisurely country walk, an evening concert.
Country pursuits in close vicinity:
The immediate countryside is ideal for exploration of all kinds:bird watching, riding and tennis. The Ganaraska and Northumberland Country forests are known for both skiing and hiking - just the place to enjoy the spectacular colours of autumn, the snowy silence of deep winter, and the summer sunshine. Health facilities range the fitness centre and children's water park in Cobourg to the spa at Ste Anne's in Grafton. This is an ideal base for children to explore the many faces of nature. The night sky is alight with stars not readily seen from in city.
A rich cultural life :
Cobourg and Port Hope have active theatre and music programs. The Capitol Arts Center has a year round program of concerts, theatre and revue movies as well as the Metropolitan Opera series. Friends of Music host world renown musicians and choirs through the fall and winter months. There is a flourishing visual arts community featured in the Northumberland Studio tour every September.
