Naramata :
Naramata was founded in 1907 primarily as an agricultural area. Due to the influence of the lake, fruit growing of apples, peaches, pears, cherries, nectarines, apricots all flourished. Originally communications with the rest of the Okanangan was by boat until 1914 when the Kettle Valley Railway was completed on the hillside above the village. Today the same conditions which were ideal for fruit growing support thriving vineyards and wineries. The remenants of the KVR which is now part of the Trans Canada Trail provide excellent opportunties for walking, hiking, cycling or just exploring the spectacular hillside above Lake Okanagan.
Naramata remains a small quaint village and continues to charm visitors today. The villages provides several amenities including a village store, post office,pub and a resturant and spa.
Naramata Bench Wineries:
The eastern slopes of the lake enjoy long warm sunny days and the moderating effects of the lake minimise frost and enable grapes to reach optimmum maturity before harvest. The area is known in the wine world as the Naramata Bench A trip to Naramata would not be complete without sampling some of the local wines and meeting the people who produce them. There are 23 excellent wineries on the Naramata Bench all within a 10 minute drive of Glenfoyle House. Each is different in character and they produce a wide variety of wines many which have won both National and International awards. A few have dining facilites and provide opportunities to match the Naramata WInes with imaginitive menus comprising mostly local produce.
The owners at Glenfoyle House have close contacts with a number of wineries and can provide information and opportunities to visit wineries particularly those whose product is not so readily available.Wine tours to suit your interest and schedule can be arranged
Activities:
Lake Okanagan provides facilities for most water sports, there is a small marina in Naramata with boat launch facilites. There are several nearby smaller lakes which provide excellent angling for trout and bass.
Local access to the KVR provides both mountain biking, walking and a variety of more challanging trails can be found nearby.
The nearby city of Penticton provides a number of leisure and retail facilities and has a number of excellent resturants. Penticton Airport provides a speedy and frequent link to the International Airports of Vancouver and Calgary.
Ski:
Apex Mountain Resort and Nickel Plate Nordic Centre are within 45 minutes of Penticton.
Golf:
There are a number of excellent golf courses around the Penticton area.
