Poilhes is situated near Oppidum Enserune, a roman hill fort founded originally by the Greeks. Through the village winds the Canal du Midi, built in the mid 1600's, beautifully shaded by tall plane trees, and bordered by numerous vineyards. The Canal du Midi is now a world heritage site (UNESCO). Local facilities include 1 wine cave with a wide choice of wines from the region, 1 English restaurant, a general store selling fruit, vegetables and other basic goods and a tennis court. 5 minutes drive is the fortress church village of Capestang with a large supermarket, more restaurants which are also at the Canal du Midi. Beziers is just 15 minutes away with a magnificent cathedral, old city streets festooned with shops, a famed outdoors flower market, as well as large general markets and in the summer the city wide Feria with bull fighting, music and dancing in the streets. The Mediterranean Sea is only 25 minutes away with resorts such as Narbonne Plage, Valras Plage.
