Franconia holiday house

Recently returned from 2 weeks here. The accommodation is to a very good standard with all amenities as described. Everything was very clean and well maintained. I believe there are just 5 houses and 5 apartments so it has a personal feel. Klaus could not have been more helpful and welcoming. He speaks good english and whilst many of the locals don't, they are still very friendly. If you don't speak much german I'd recommend a phrase book and dictionary.
There are only a few places to eat out in the beautiful but small town centre (our kids loved the pizza/pasta resaurant) but the resort will provide delicious evening meals by arrangement. There is a small supermarket 1 min walk away as well as butcher and baker in the town. The larger towns provide a variety of restaurants from the traditional german to chinese and indian.
The local walks are pleasant but this is not a rambler's destination being rural but lacking interest for the keen walker. If disco or club nightlife is your thing, look elsewhere. However, if you like to see pretty villages, visit remarkable historic cities or lie on a lakeside beach with cycling, pedaloes etc. this might be the place for you. We especially enjoyed our visits to Bamberg (beautiful, historic and loads to do.) Rothenburg is very touristy - not really my cup of tea. Nuremburg is worth a visit - check out their Tourist Info website where you can download a free mp3 audio guide to the main attractions. We found having our laptop there useful (free wireless broadband provided) or there are 2 PCs for guests to use.
I would not want to do this holiday without a car. Attractions within walking distance are very limited and public transport is what you would expect in the context of a small rural town. If you fly to Nuremburg, Klaus will pick you up and cars can be hired locally. Satnav made life very easy.
The only improvement to the accommodation I would like to see is air con. It was very hot and humid making sleep more difficult. In this weather, insect bites are a significant issue and you will need to be well prepared. We found the plug in insect killers that use tablets and release a vapour helped a lot.
Overall: highly recommended.
