Santa Maria: pool, sauna, fitness:
The long, narrow pool has a changing room, shower (hot and cold) and a bathroom. It is on the slope under the cypress trees belonging to the main house. It is bordered by a wood-planked patio and deck chairs (see photos). A gnarled, old fig tree, with delicious fruits for our guests, offers shade. The Klafs sauna has 3 different sauna settings and can be used free of charge with prior arrangement (warm up time is about 1 hour). The furnishings include 3 different showers, Kneipp basin, deck chairs, fitness machines and weights.
St. Maria : Mediterranean Sea + Lago di Bolsena:
The Ultima Spiaggia beach has earned its name as the most south laying or 'last' beach in Tuscany. We visit it weekly during the summer. This very well cultivated beach is open from the mid-May to mid-September: chair rentals, deck chair rentals, sunshade rentals, showers, restaurants with service or self-service (you can also be served at your own deck chair), attended and covered parking spaces etc. It can be reached in about 1 hour by car from Castel Giorgio. The Lago di Bolsena (Latium) is only 23 km away - all water sports are possible here. (Diameter 13 km, depth 150 m) Thanks to the proximity to the sea (80 km), the lake is not often visited; quiet, empty fields and olive groves border the water. Specialty: the Corregone is a type of trout that tastes delicious and is prepared delectably in many restaurants. The fish is also useful as it eats insect larvae from the water surface, so that there are hardly any insects.
St. Maria: History:
The site of the former monastery of Santa Maria della Concezione (SMC) is on a historic peak: to the east, it overlooks the Valle di Lapone (in the direction of Orvieto); to the south it borders the rocky cliff. The Etruscans had settled here, witnessed by the ancient tuff grottoes facing the sun. In Roman times, the old Cassia Trail ran directly through the site. In the Middle Ages a formidable fortified tower indicated the limit of the Papal States ruling here and old church registers stand testimonial of the monastic life in the time of the Trent council. Since the secularization the buildings served mainly for agricultural purposes and are now in the possession of the Bracci Testa Secca family whose summer residence is in the immediate neighborhood even today.
