Peace and quiet:
This somehow overlooked little jewel offers something for everybody. Away from the tourist hussle-buzzle on the coast, you take a dip into rural Andalusia, here you will experience how time seems to have stood still. Swing in the hammock and soak up the village noises, the mules that go past a few times daily or Jacinto the local fishmonger as he shouts “Vamos pecao”(come and buy fish) or the veggie seller “ niña papas”. Or take a refreshing dip in the cave Jacuzzi a very original place to while a day away. In the evening take your favourite drink, sit up on the terrace and watch the moon rise or set or on moonless nights explore the milky way or count the shooting stars, always with a secret wish. Or visit us over here at La Rueda (Nº29292) for a chat and some coffee and cake. This place is an idyllic as it sounds.
Activities:
Directly from the house start short and also longer walks to explore the local mountains. A bit further on you will pass through a small gorge and then come to Guajar Alto, the smallest of the 3 Guajar villages. Wander along the different mule tracks past and through Mediterrenean Olive-Orange-Avocado and Chirimoya groves. Enjoy the almond blossom that starts in February and succumb to the perfume of the orange blossom (El Azahar) in March. Watch the farmers in the planting season or at harvest time. The nearest beach is 20 minutes away and a little bit further you will find still rather untouched and romantic coves. Granada with its famous Alhambra, its charming, Moorish Albayzin and its quaint old town is only 1 hr away. The cosy and original villages of the Alpujarra with its crystal clear streams, refreshing river pools and the snow covered 3000m mountains always invite you to hike and explore and are only 45 minutes away. Come, relax and enjoy!
Local culture:
The 700 year era of Moorish-Arabic culture has left its traces all over Andalusia. The mountain terraces with its mentioned acequias(water flows) surround the whole valley. Many of the cultivated produce stem back to the Moors. This influence you will also taste in the local cuisine, the nearly daily eaten migas with sardines or papas a la pobre e.g. the famous air dried ham of the Alpujarra, the different mountain cheeses or the varied fish and stew dishes. All these specialities very often you can sample as a (free) tapa that comes with your (alcoholic)drink. Start you day with a café con leche up in the bar and experience like this the local coffee culture. Ask us about the local handcraft and we will point out workshops that make pottery, wool weavings, leather weavings, leather clothing or woodcraft. Enjoy Andalusian music and experience the bubbly happiness of the locals, who cannot sit still when they hear Flamenco! Olé!
