Culture:
The Semperoper (Semper Opera) and the Staatsschauspiel (The City’s Theatre) are two of Germany’s finest theatres. Apart from those two, Dresden offers several other theatres and cabarets. For art lovers, we recommend the art collections with historical and contemporary art. The Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault) houses a priceless collection of jewellery and artisan objects spanning several centuries. For children, the zoo, the Verkehrsmuseum (Traffic Museum), the Hygienemusem (Museum of Man) and the Technischen Sammlungen (Science and Industry Museum) are recommended. A multiplex movied theatre can be reached on foot in only 8 minutes. Beneath the romantic cupola of the Yenidze (an old tobacco factory built to resemble a mosque), old and young can listen to fairy tales. During the summer season, concerts and plays are also put on in the surrounding castles and parks. We gladly assist you in obtaining tickets. For a pub crawl, we recommend Dresden’s Neustadt (New Town).
Sights:
Dresden’s historical centre with the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), Schloss (Castle), Zwinger (a beautiful baroque structure housing several museums) and Semperoper (Semper Opera) is worth a journey in itself. The nearby city of Meißen with the Albrechtsburg (Albrecht Castle) and the porcelain manufactory, Moritzburg with its water castle and the zoo as well as Schloss Pillnitz (Pillnitz Castle) and the unique landscape of the Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland) are all worthwhile excursions.
Sports:
There is a paved cycling path along the river Elbe which is also open to skaters. Several riding stables in the area offer riding lessons for children and adults. Swimming is possible in several open air pools and lakes (clothing optional in some areas). Hikes along the hills overlooking the Elbe start right on our doorstep. The Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland) offers hikes for all abilities with spectacular views. The area is also a free-climber’s paradise.
Ski:
There is a skiing area in Altenberg in the Erzgebirge (a nearby mountain range) at about 800 m with both downhill and cross-country skiing. It can be reached by car or train (40 km).
Golf:
The golfing range Ullersdorf on the Dresdner Heide (a nearby forest) is 4 km away.
