Paradix is the name of a holiday-oasis for discriminating guests, situated between Béziers and Narbonne, and 20 minutes from the Mediterranean coast, and is ideal for those who, in the security of one of its four, generously planned and comfortably furnished apartments - enclosed in its garden with swimming pool - are seeking peace and relaxation. Paradix in fact, may modestly be taken to suggest paradise. Adjacent to Nissan's church Saint-Saturnin, its gateway is the entry to a property, built originally towards the end of the 19th century by a family of wine merchants. The original stables and out-buildings, surrounding on two sides the Maison de Maître, have now become four carefully restored maisonette-apartments between 57 and 93 sq. m. These we rent by the week. Each of two floors, kitchen and dining /living room below with direct access to a private patio- garden and bedroom(s) and bathroom above.

Maisonette 1 provides holiday accommodation for up to four guests. One enters through a small patio-garden furnished with dining table and chairs. The ground floor comprises a light-filled living and dining room with a view into the half-open, carefully designed and equipped kitchen with its dish washer. A comfortably proportioned spiral staircase leads to the upper floor. Each of the two bedrooms offers the possibility of making two single, or one double bed (180 x 200 cm). Each has a spacious built-in wardrobe and a small working table. They are adjacent to a well-lighted modern bathroom with washbasin, WC and shower. Both the living room and bedrooms face south onto the large garden with its ancient plane trees.

Nissan, a lively village with its some 3000 inhabitants, quickly becomes 'home' for our guests. Those who do not wish always to climb into their cars, will find all their needs fulfilled, also on Sunday morning. Bread, fresh food and vegetables, newspapers, chemist, bank with bancomat. Added to which, a small market three times a week. Nearby is to be found the famous Oppidum d'Ensérune and the magnificent Canal du Midi (named by Unesco as a Patrimony of Humanity), which was opened to shipping on the 15th May 1684. A large selection of printed information concerning destinations culturally worth while visiting and regional events, is at our guests disposition. A brochure with practical tips is to be found in each apartment.

Notes to the rental rates

  • Included in the price is the thorough cleaning of your apartment, both before your arrival and after your departure. Your stay in Paradix can therefore remain a pleasure until the last minute. With a booking of two or more weeks, your apartment will be cleaned each week, after consultation with you, on either Friday or Saturday. At the same time all your wash will be renewed and your bed(s) freshly made. The wash from your bedroom, bathroom and kitchen is of course, included in the weekly rate, as is electricity, water, TV and when necessary, heating. We offer a 10% rebate during the period from the middle of September until the middle of June for a reservation of more than two weeks, as from the third week.
  • Not included are: 1. The use by guests of the independent guest washing machine. For a single wash, including washing powder and the ironing-board we ask a symbolic charge. 2. The provision of a choice of food which you may have requested us to procure for you before your arrival and awaiting you in your apartment. On reception of your reservation, we will send you a list (with the price indicated) of these provisions which will allow you after a late arrival, to prepare a small supper or first breakfast, saving you from going shopping on arrival.
  • Mode of payment: Following the receipt of your e-mail-reservation we shall send you our reservation form (with sundry useful information) and which we would ask you to return to us completed and signed. The chosen apartment is now provisionally reserved for the period you have indicated and you will receive from us a reservation confirmation and a detailed map. Finally the reservation becomes definite and binding from the moment that you have transferred to us 50% of the total rent. The payment of the second half of the rent is then due, four weeks before the beginning of your holiday in Paradix. Should your booking be at short notice, we would ask you to make a single payment, corresponding to the total amount. Contrary to current practice we make no demand for the payment of a bond on arrival. However, we would be most grateful if - at the latest before your departure - you would draw our attention to any damage which may have occurred.

A complete comfort

When restoring the buildings, designing the kitchens and other interior spaces we have closely kept in mind the needs of our future guests. When on holiday it is, of course, not always necessary to find exactly that which one has at home. However, the question of quality remains the same. For all the architectural details and choice of pictures, Colin Glennie, a fervant architect and now Paradix-host, was responsible. The pale floor tiles, the white walls and striking touches of colour, ensure a fundamentally Mediterranean ambiance. The furnishing assures a high degree of comfort as do the beds. The assorted lingerie has been carefully chosen and the kitchens and their equipment should meet the needs of all cooks. And that which is most important for those on holiday, the southern light flows through the generous window openings. Clear coloured curtains and sun blinds ensure both shade and privacy.

For everybody's enjoyment

There is the large garden. In the shade of century old plane trees or in other intimate corners, alone or in the company of fellow guests, one can read or chat, take a snack or drink a glass of one of the many excellent local wines. Olive, Eucalyptus, magnificent fig and many other shady trees and shrubs offer a wide variety of birds, shelter, food and ideal places to nest. According to the season, lavander, roses, oleander and an endless variety of ornamental plants provide an ever changing array of colour. Rosemary, thyme, sage, basil, mint and other aromatic kitchen herbs thrive in abundance either directly in the earth or in pots. There they await to be picked and employed with pleasure. For cooling off and pure enjoyment the swimming pool (12 x 6.5 m) equipped with a modern chemical-free sterilisation plant, takes full responsibility.

Are you interested to visit castles that were once Cathar strongholds, cathedrals, churches and monasteries? Would you enjoy exploring on foot or by bicycle, the sinuous path beside the Canal du Midi? Are you fascinated by broad expansive views of the sea and its sandy beaches, gazing at ships and visiting fish markets? Do you enjoy sports - tempted to hire a canoe - or undertake gastronomic exploration and discover fine wines? (Languedoc-Roussillon is an open secret for wine connoisseurs.)
