Summary of the house, 2 bedrooms, sleeps 4

La Pouyette offers simplicity and charm for those with eclectic taste who want a traditional holiday home with the convenience of modern living and something extra special! The Holiday House is a typical South-West of France 'mas', an old lime stone building, dating from the late 17th Century, situated on a hilltop with magnificent views of the rolling countryside, recently restored and enlarged. The pool with a depth throughout of 1.5 metres has a saline (rather than chlorine) filtration system and is set in a large terrace of 120 square metres which leads directly to the living room. Evergreen flowering shrubs, small olive trees, subtropical plants together with the heady scent of aromatic herbs; give through every season that southern feeling we all like.

The Périgord

The 'département' of Dordogne covered almost the whole of the old province of Périgord when it came into being in the late 18th century under Napoleon. Countless Chateaux, typical Périgord hamlets and fortified hilltop towns appear at what seems like each bend of the winding roads. Breathtaking views of valleys, undulating patch-works of fields and small forests, exuding in all seasons the distinctive aroma of the Périgord. In autumn truffles, wild mushrooms, figs, wine harvest; duck, goose, comfit in winter. Springtime brings its abundance of fruits. Now, after a long and eventful history, it has all the characteristics of an age-old region with an outstanding heritage; many times admired and described by writers like Jules Verne and Henry Miller. Though full of history and old culture, the people still manage to retain a certain human warmth. The Périgord is an invitation to re-discover the real 'art of life', a recipe of 'bien-etre' and taste, often forgotten in these days.

La Pouyette

La Pouyette was originally, in the 17th Century, one large farm with several barns and outbuildings, standing astride the remains of a Roman road which connected Riberac and Verteillac at that time. Today it is a small hamlet of four, well spaced apart, other properties owned by mainly retired French families. The Roman road is now little more than a track, wide enough for a tractor or car to get by. The house where the owner lives stands back away from the Holiday House which has its own separate entrance, guests are therefore not overlooked and disturbed in their privacy. The house was built, enlarged and carefully restored, maintaining all traditional features, from what was once one of the stone outbuildings of the original farm. The distinctive character of old stone houses in the region has been retained, but now allows today's standard of comfort.

Accommodation - Interior

The restoration was completed in June 2004. The interior, designed and tastefully furnished by a noted German antique dealer and interior consultant, has now a special ambience, simple but charming country elegance with a contemporary touch. A spacious and restful atmosphere has been created. The house has central heating and therefore very comfortable all year round. An outside table on the tiled terrace with seating for up to six provides a good place to have breakfast in the gentle warmth of the morning sun. By lunchtime this area is mainly in shade and provides a pleasant spot out of the direct rays of the sun. In the late evening and after sunset this spot is a wonderful place to relax and with the pool illuminated, watch the fascinating play of reflections dancing from the water onto the surrounding walls and shrubbery. Guests are free to stroll around the large country garden with its fruit, walnut and fig trees which is behind the pool area.
