Photos and Description of this Xcalak holiday villa 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1100 sq ft Unit with Breathtaking Caribbean Views

Located between the town of Mahahual and the community of Xcalak, 2 hours north of the Belize border, Villa Costa Maya sits on an isolated stretch of Caribbean beach known as the 'Costa Maya', designated by the Mexican government as an 'eco-tourist' destination. At our house, you will be greeted by our full-time caretakers, who will provide daily cleaning, as well as attend to your needs. Hand-crafted mahogany furniture, as well as locally made wall adornments will make you feel you are in Colonial Mexico. Tropical sea breezes and the sight and sound of the Caribbean will likely occupy your mind for hours at a time. Expansive sliding glass doors bring the outside in, but siting on the terrace is the better way to enjoy the view.

The Costa Maya is the last stretch of undeveloped property along Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. This is rapidly changing, as over 10,000 resort/hotel units are scheduled over the next 10-15 years. Come now to our villa and experience the peace and tranquility that may not last much longer. While much of the town of Mahahual was destroyed by Hurricane Dean last Summer, it is rapidly rebuilding. A new malecon is under construction, and the cruise ship dock is scheduled to reopen this fall. Our house suffered minor damage and was returned to normal in November.

Further details for this holiday villa rental in Xcalak, Mexico

Amenities: The kitchen includes 4 burner propane stove, full-size refrigerator, sink, cabinets, and basic cooking utensils, drinking water dispenser. Bar stools, plus dining room table allows formal or informal eating. Living room has coffee table and futon, which can fold down for double bed sleeping. Bedroom offers plenty of closet space, queen size bed, with 2 night stands with night light. Ceiling fans in the living area are rarely needed due to sea breezes. Bathrooms are fully tiled up to six feet on the walls, featuring walk-in showers Water from our cistern is pumped to the roof for gravity fed washing and bathing. Auxiliary water heater assures plenty of hot water.

The house is 'off the grid', meaning our solar panels collect electricity to our batteries, which is converted to 110 ac by our inverter. A back-up generator kicks in when it's cloudy for several days (not often). This system requires user-friendliness: no heat producing products: coffee maker, hair dryer, iron, etc. There is one washing machine on site, and rope available for a temporary clothes line. There is also an outdoor shower to rinse off from the ocean. Activities: Take advantage of all the Caribbean has to offer: swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, charter fishing; take day trips to relatively uncrowded Maya ruins; wander the streets of nearby Mahahual fishing village (recently heavily damaged by Hurricane Dean); swim with the dolphins; or just watch a sunrise from your bed. Area: The small community of Xcalak is 45 minutes by car, an excellent place to charter a boat or arrange scuba or snorkel tours to famed Chinchorro Bank, 30 minutes off shore.

In the opposite direction is Mahahual, 30 minutes by car. Recently, Hurricane Dean devastated this town, as well as incapacitating the cruise ship dock. You can help these people get back on their feet by using whatever services are being offered there.

Our Little Piece of Paradise

Our little piece of Paradise
Ocean Lovers N.Y., N.Y. Date Submitted:Feb 07, 2008 Date of Stay: Jan 21, thru Jan 28th 2008

My Wife & I recently vacationed again at Villa Costa Maya in Costa Maya, Mexico for the 6th time in 3 years. It's the "perfect vacation spot" for people who wish to get "away from it all". It offers a complete, totally relaxed vacation. The Caribbean Ocean views from the Terraces are awesome, the finest we have ever encountered anywhere in the World during our travels. It's located directly on the Beach, steps away from the beautiful blue water. The "pristine beaches" are totally deserted for miles & miles, except for an occasional Fisherman, we had only one person snorkeling during the entire week. It's a Paradise for Divers, Fisherman & for Snorkeling. The Villa is kept spotlessly clean & offers Angelina & Mario as excellent, kind, caring, attentive caretakers. We kept in touch with our family via e-mail, there is Internet Connection & we used our cell phone from the Terraces. It's a piece of "pure Paradise", exactly like your living on a "completely deserted Island in the South Pacific" & the Beaches are devoid of any tourists, no crowds, no noise, no pollution, just sheer bliss. The roads in & out to Villa Costa Maya are kept in perfect condition, either via the Beach Road or the hard Road from the Majahual Highway. We would "highly recommend" Villa Costa Maya to anyone who wants a "perfect vacation spot" & wants to get away from it all.

Owner's Response: Guests should check with their cell phone carriers regarding phone service in Mexico. Not all carriers roam in Mexico.

This location is great for those who like to be "away from it all." Only neighbors for miles are one house about 1/2 mile south, and a small (pretty empty) hotel about 2 1/2 miles north. The beach, being uninhabited, had about an 8-10 foot-wide swath of debris as far as the eye can see. There was trash floating in the water, too, when we tried to swim, but it was a pretty wavy day. The owners worked very hard to keep the trash off of the beach directly in front of their house, and did a good job at that.
Because the internet was not working while we were there, the only way to communicate with family was to drive the 25-30 minutes into Mahahual, and use an internet cafe, or to go to the hotel just north of the house and buy something to eat to use their wi-fi. I would imagine that the internet has since been fixed, because the owners are staying in the top floor.
The owners are genial people. The unit is spacious, but not luxurious (very little decoration, only one dim lamp in the bedroom and living room). The kitchen has adequate cooking facilities. The bathroom is nice- fully tiled. They do encourage conservation in water-usage and in electricity. Bring a headlamp to be able to read in bed if you are on the side without a lamp. You will want to watch for scorpions, as we found a very "grande" one (maybe 4-5 inches) in the bedroom one morning. The owners said the size was extremely unusual. We chased it out with a flyswatter--- hopefully we scared it away for good!
Relaxing on the patio, listening to the waves and looking at the beautiful ocean, was the best part of our stay here.

Owner's Response: There was a severe storm prior to these guests' visit. Not only was it impossible to keep debris off the beach, a 30 foot ship anchored 1 kilometer north broke anchor and sank 2 days before. The seas continued to bring up debris for the next several days.
In Mexico, nothing happens quickly, and it took several weeks to get internet service back. These guests were able to access internet at the nearest hotel, less than 5 minutes away by car. Had they asked to use our cell phone, we would gladly have let them, as we have let others before and after them.
Personally, we use the bedroom to sleep in,and do our reading in the living room. Had these guests asked, we could have given them one of our lamps from upstairs.
Yes, we're in the tropics and there are scorpions. They can sneek in if the door is left open during housekeeping and this was the 3rd sighting in 3 years.

Piece of Paradise

Review Submitted: May 14, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
We really enjoyed staying at Villa Costa Maya. It was like having your own private beach. Most of the day we could stand on the beach and not see another person. Mario and Angelina take great care of us while we were there. I did miss taking long hot showers, but that was a small price to pay for the peacefulness of the home. We kept the sliding glass door open at night and the sound of the wind and surf made for a relaxing night of sleep. We didn't have any need for the ceiling fans and did not have a need for a/c. Mahahual is being rebuilt at this time but it still has some good restaurants and will be quite the tourist spot in the near future, but it is far enough away from the home that it won't effect the quite of your stay. It is close enough that you can go there for a quick bite to eat if you don't want to cook.
Mario will be able to arrange any of the local activities for you as he knows the area very well.
One of our favorite memories will be having to stop on the road to Xcalak to let a wild tapir cross in front of us.

Am amazing place, definitely want to go back soon! The property's location was great, close to Mahahual yet far enough away for total relaxation. The property was clean and well-maintained. The beach and water was beautiful and the caretakers, Mario & Angelina were fabulous. Definitely a place for the traveller who wants to avoid the "crowds".

Perfect Contentment

Sussan Green Bay, WI USA
Review Submitted: March 24, 2008 Date of Stay: March 2008
Visualize a utopia of white sand beaches that go on for miles, warm breeze, clean clear turqoise water and you... only you. Villa Costa Maya was all this and so much more. This is a enchanting, comfortable, safe, modern villa in a remote area. If you are looking for quiet solitude and inspirational beauty look no further. We knew we had found our paradise within moments of arrival. Mario and Angelina caretakers of the Villa were prompt greeting us and continued to attend to our needs, give advise and where patient with our elementary spanish. It was comforting to have someone nearby because it is a unpopulated area, but they where never obtrusive.

The property owners where helpful with suggestions for thing to do and eateries. Communication with our familiy and the owner was very efficient due to the satelite internet system. We where not able to use our cell phone anywhere in the area. All the basic needs are provided in the kitchen, the house was cleaned and linens changed daily by Angelina, beach and areas around the villa are kept prestine.

If your idea of a great vacation is to be entertained this is not the place for you. This delightful location will provide a life of ease and enchantment. The small villages of Mayahual and Xacalak have a wonderful welcoming safe community of about 150 people. Diving and fishing in the area is a attraction for the few tourist you will meet, bringing a very eclectic group of young and old world travelers. In all of our traveles we have never found such a lulling, soothing, restorative and stimualting location. Not only did we find our perfect vacation spot, we also found the place we want to retire. What a blessing.
